Historical Description

EYTHORNE (divided into Upper and Lower Eythome) is a parish, 7 miles north-west from Dover, 6 ½ south-west from Sandwich and 2 north-east from Shepherdswell station on the Canterbury and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the Eastern division of the county, Eastry hundred and union, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, Sandwich county court district, and in the rural deanery of Sandwich and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is of rough flints, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower of flint and brick at the north-east angle, containing 5 bells, one being added, and the Test rehung in 1896: there is a memorial window to the late Baroness Grey de Ruthyn, d. 15 Dec. 1887, and some monuments: in 1875 and 1890 the church was restored at a cost of upwards of £2,000 and £1,000 respectively, and affords about 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1597. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £240, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Guilford and Pelham R. Papillon esq. of Crowhurst, Sussex, alternately, and field since 1894 by the Rev. Basil Burrows M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel, originally built in 1550, and has 600 sittings. The charities amount to £6 12s. 6d. yearly, derived from funds left under the wills of P. Fector esq. and W. Lambert, and are distributed in money and bread to the poor by the rector and parish council. Elvington Court is the property and residence of Capt. Graham Eden Shedden. The principal landowners are the Governors of Bethlehem Hospital, the trustees of the late Admiral Sir Edward Bridges Rice K.C.B. of Dane Court (d. 1902), Major George R. Edgell of Midford, Somerset, and the Earl of Guilford. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats; the area is 1,322 acres; rateable value, £2,146; the population in 1901 was 424.

National School (mixed), built in 1891 & enlarged in 1898, for 125 children; average attendance, 75.
