Historical Description

FARNBOROUGH is a large village and parish, pleasantly situated on the high road from London to Sevenoaks, i½ miles south-west from Orpington station on the Tonbridge line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 4 south from Bromley, and 14 from London, and in the Western division of the county, jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court and Metropolitan Police, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Ruxley hundred, Bromley petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of West Dartford, archdeaconry of Maidstone, and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Giles is of chalk and flint, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing 2 bells; there is a monument to Thomas Brome esq. 1673, and several stained windows; the nave and tower were restored in 1838, and the chancel in 1886, at a cost of £1,100. The church affords 300 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net income £188, in the gift of W. H. Dines esq. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Graves Lombard M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. The Brethren and the Baptists have meeting houses here, the latter erected in 1846, and has 750 sittings. There is no lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Right Hon. Sir William Hart Dyke bart. P.C., M.P. of Lullingstone Castle, the Earl of Derby K.G. Lord Avebury P.C. and Messrs. Fox. The soil is mostly gravel; subsoil, chalk. Some wheat, barley and oats are grown, and there are a great number of fruit gardens; 200 acres of land are planted with strawberries. The area is 1,429 acres; rateable value, £14,210; the population in 1901 was 2,262, including 34 officers and 532 inmates in Bromley union workhouse.
