Historical Description

FRITTENDEN is a parish and village, standing on high ground between two heads of the river Beult, 4 ½ miles north-east from Cranbrook, 3 ½ south-west from Headcom station and 3 ¾ south-east from Staplehurst station, both on the main line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway and 45 from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundreds of Barkley and Cranbrook, lathe of Lower Scray, Cranbrook petty sessional division and union, Tenterden county court district and in the rural deanery of West Charing, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary, rebuilt on the original site in 1848, is of Kentish rag with Bath stone dressings in the Decorated style, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells: the tower was restored in 1881: there are 380 sittings, of which 200 are free. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1558, marriages and burials from 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £273, with residence and 22 acres of glebe, in the gift of Charles John Oakeley esq. J.P. and held since 1899 by the Rev. Rupert Edward Inglis M.A. of University College, Oxford. Thomas Idenden esq. of Hawkhurst, left 28 acres of land, together with seven houses, producing an annual rental of £92, to the two churchwardens and four other trustees, for the benefit of the poor of the parish, which amount is distributed in money on St. Thomas’ Day. The country in the neighbourhood is dotted over with numerous small ponds.

Camden Hill, the residence of Capt. George H. Moore R.N., J.P. Frittenden House, the residence of Charles John Oakeley esq. J.P. is a handsome mansion near the church; in the grounds there is an extensive sheet of ornamental water. The Earl of Cranbrook P.C., G.C.S.I., D.C.L, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis esq. D.L., J.P. of Linton Park, Charles John Oakeley esq. J.P. and William Boys Tylden-Pattenson esq. D.L., J.P. of Dashmonden, Biddenden. The soil is various; subsoil, clay and loam. The chief crops are hay, corn and hops. The area is 3,491 acres of land and 18 of water; rateable value, £3,709; the population in 1901 was 844.
