Historical Description

The village of Gillinhgam, two miles northeast from Chatham, is principally inhabited by persons belonging to the dockyard and its appendages. The archbishop of Canterbury had a palace here, on the south side of the churchyard, of which there are at present scarcely any remains left, excepting the hall, now used as a granary or barn.

The church is a spacious structure, consisting of a nave, aisles, and chancel, with a chapel on each side the latter, and a square tower at the west-end. Among the very few fragments of the painted glass that formerly adorned the windows of this church, there are the remains of a bishop in the northeast window. The chancel exhibits some interesting specimens of Norman architecture. The font is also Norman : it is of a circular form, and sufficiently capacious for dipping.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

GILLINGHAM is an extensive parish, including within its boundary Old and New Brompton and a small portion of High street, Chatham, and is mentioned in Domesday Book; it is situated on the south bank of the navigable Medway, on which there is a pier, 33 miles from London, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, hundred of Chatham and Gillingham, Rochester petty sessional division and county court district, Medway union, and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The South Eastern and Chatham railway traverses the centre of the parish and the New Brompton and Gillingham station is about half a mile west of Gillingham church. The parish hitherto has been governed by a Local Board formed in 1873, but under the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict, c. 73) a District Council is the local authority; the district is divided into three wards, Brompton, Gillingham and New Brompton; Gillingham is supplied with water by the Chatham Water Company, and lighted with gas by the Rochester, Chatham and Strood Gas Company. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is in the Norman, Early English and Late Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells: there are considerable remains of Norman work and fragments of several once magnificent brasses, including part of one to W. Beaufitz, 1438, and one to John Bregge, 1433, a former vicar, besides many old tombstones: the font is also Norman: the church was completely restored in 1868, under the direction of the late Sir A. W. Blomfield: several stained windows, a stone reredos, pulpit and lectern, the work of J. E. Lock Beveridge esq. have since been introduced: there are 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558, and there is also a complete list of vicars from the year 1278. The living is a vicarage, net income £250, with residence and 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late William Rumney esq. and held since 1878 by the Rev. William Henry Robins D.D. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels, and Salvation Army Barracks. The parish cemetery, near St. Mary’s church, was considerably enlarged in 1878 and a portion is allotted for Catholics and Wesleyans: a piece of land, near Woodlands, has recently (1902) been purchased, as an addition to the cemetery: it is managed by a burial board of 9 members. The charities, amounting to £53 14s. yearly, are annually distributed to the poor in coals and clothes. A fair is held here on Easter Monday. A battle took place here between Edmund Ironside and Cnut the Great, c. 1016. William of Gillingham, who wrote a history of England in the reign of Richard II. was born here, as was also William Adams, an adventurer, who reached Japan 19 April, 1600. Gillingham Castle, a fort, built in the time of Charles I. is now destroyed. There was anciently a palace here, belonging to the Archbishops of Canterbury, the cellars of winch now form part of the vicarage house. B. Gosling esq. is lord of the manor and A. F. W. Stephens, solicitor, Chatham, is steward of the manor. The principal landowners are The Lock family and Walter Charles Stunt esq. Brasenose College, Oxford, own the great tithes. The soil is part loam and part gravel; subsoil, chalk and brick earth The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes and there are a few market gardens. The area is 4,239 acres of land and 87 of water, 89 of tidal water, and 1,147 foreshore; rateable value (including New Brompton), £140,157; the population in 1891 of the entire parish was 27,872, and in 1901, 41,441, of which 6,598 are attached to the mother parish.
