Historical Description

The town, or village, of Goudhurst, about four miles from Cranbrook, is built on the sides of five different roads. The houses are mostly large, ancient, and well timbered. The Church is a conspicuous object to the neighbouring country, and near it was formerly the market place, which was pulled down about the year 1650; and the present small one built. The market was held on a Wednesday, weekly, for cattle, provision, &c, till within memory; it is now entirely disused. There is, however, a fair still held at Goudhurst, on the 26th of August annually.

GOUDHURST is a small town and parish, with a station one mile south-west on the Cranbrook and Hawkhurst branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 4 miles north-west from Cranbrook, 16 ½ by rail and 12 ¾ by road south from Maidstone, and 43 from London by road, in the Southern division of the county, hundreds of Marden, Cranbrook and West Barnfield, lathe of Scray, Cranbrook petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of West Charing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The place is lighted with gas by a limited company. The church, with a great portion of the town, is situated on a high ridge 419 feet above sea-level, commanding on all sides most extensive and varied prospects. The church of St. Mary is of sandstone, in the Early English, Decorated and Late Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing a clock with chimes and 8 bells: there are a number of memorial windows, and an altar-tomb with effigies; monuments and brasses to the Bedgebery and Colepeper families: the church has been restored and partly rebuilt, and affords 750 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £300, with residence and 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1864 by the Rev. James Sanderson Clarke M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The National Schoolroom at Winchet Hill, is licensed for Church of England services. There is a Catholic church, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, with a resident priest, and there are also Baptist, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. A cemetery of 2 roods 28 perches has been added on the-south side of the churchyard, and is controlled by a burial board of 9 members, formed in 1873. The charities produce about £167 a year. The Grange is the residence of Leonard B. Franklin esq.; Ladham House, the seat of Sir Charles James Jessel bart. D.L., J.P. was enlarged in 1880; Brandfold, the residence of Alfred Stern esq. is a modern Tudor mansion. Trowswell is the residence of Haskett Smith esq. Isaac Lewis esq. of Bedgebury Park, Edward Windsor Hussey esq. of Scotney Castle, Lamberhurst; Major John Roberts Atkin-Roberts, of Glassenbury Park, and Lt.-Col. William Henry Campion V.D. of Hove, Sussex, who are lords of the manor, and Alfred Stern esq. Sir C. J. Jessel bart. and the Rev. Hugh Forbes Smith-Mairiott M.A rector of Horsmonden, are the principal landowners. The soil is various; the subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are hops, fruit and cereals, with the usual proportions of pasture. The area of the whole parish is 9,758 acres of land and 39 of water; rateable value, £13,742; the population in 1901 was, civil, 2,725, ecclesiastical, 1,959.

In 1671 John Horsmonden, of Goudhurst, endowed a grammar school here, but the endowment has been converted into exhibitions of £15 each for 3 years.
