Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
The parish church of Gravency, a village about three miles to the right of our road, contains some very ancient memorials for the respective lords of the manor; several of the inscriptions are singularly curious, from containing the words; "post conquestum Anglice" which seem to relate, from the inscriptions themselves, to some event of the year 1421. On the verge of a very large slab, in the north chancel, in memory of John Martyn and Anne, his wife, is the following inscription : "hic jacet Johnes Martyn, quondam unus Justiciarior. Dni Regio de Coi Banco. Dui obiit vicesimo quarto die mensis Decebris, anno dni. Millimo. CCCCXXXVI et anno Regni Henriei Serti pos conquestn Angli equinto decimo. Ac eciam Ainnia uxor ejus qe obit … die mensis … annon dmi. Millesimo CCCC. quor," On another slab, lying loose in the north aisle, are the words: "Drate pro anima Thome Borgeys Armigi qui obiit Vicesimo seconde die Mensis Novembr MCCCCLI et Anno Regi Regis Henrici Sexti post conquestu Anglie tricesimon poimo cujus." On a third slab are half-length figures, in brass, under a Gothic skreen, of Thomas de Feversham, and Joan his wife; the former of whom is represented in a cowl, with a forked beard of the time of Richard the Second. On the tomb of their son, Richard de Feversham, who died in 1381, is a brass of a knight, in complete plate armour, with a shirt and gorget of mail, a long sword, and his feet on a lion; at his side it appears that there was formerly another figure. The east window of this chancel contains painted glass, and is nearly perfect. It is disposed into three lights, on a ground of network, each square being ornamented with a vine leaf. The centre light represents the crucifixion, and the side lights the Virgin Mary and St. John : below the virgin is St. Michael, combating the dragon, and under the crucifixion are the arms of Botiller. In the east window of the present chancel is a well-executed portrait of Henry VI. and in one of the upper lights, the figure of St. John the Evangelist.
GRAVENEY is a village and parish on high ground, overlooking Seasalter level and Nagden marshes, adjoining the Swale, 5 miles south-west from Whitstable and 4 north-east from Faversham station on the Margate and Ramsgate branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, Boughton-under-Blean hundred, lathe of Scray, Faversham petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. All Saints’ church is of flint and stone, and varies in style from Norman down to Tudor: the western tower contains one bell: there are two mural monuments and a number of brasses: the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1553. The living is a vicarage, with that of Goodnestone annexed, joint net yearly value £200, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Hon. H. A. Milles-Lade, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Abdiel Hanham T.A.K.C.L. A sum of 34s. derived from Miss Robinson's charity, is distributed yearly in fuel. Earl Sondes and Henry E. D. Blaxland esq. are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Earl Sondes, the Hon, Henry Augustus Milles-Lade, of Nash Court, Boughton-under-Blean and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. The soil and subsoil are various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, oats, hops and turnips. The area is 1,994 acres of land, 1 of water, 251 of tidal water, and 768 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,785; in 1901 the population was 253.
Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act,” a detached part of Boughton-under-Blean, known as Cleve Marshes, has been added to this parish.
Nagden is a mile and a half west, on Faversham creek; Broomstreet is half a mile west; Sandbanks, one mile west.
A School Board of five members was formed here 29 July, 1874, for the united district of Goodnestone & Graveney; Allan Tassell, Faversham, clerk to the board; Thomas Smith St. Mary’s road, Favershamr attendance officer.
Board School (mixed), erected, with mistress’s house, in 1875, at a cost of £1,072, for 80 children; average attendance, 65.
