Historical Description

GUSTON is a parish, about 2 ½ miles north from Dover stations, on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the Eastern division of the county, Bewsborough hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, union, and county court district of Dover, and in the rural deanery of Dover and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Martin is of flint, in part of Norman date, and has a tower containing one bell: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1571. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of River, joint net yearly value £230, with 56 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Sherard Montagu Statham M.A. of Queen’s College, Cambridge, and chaplain to the forces at Dover, who resides at River. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. H.M. convict prison, in this parish, close to the sea, and about a mile from Dover, will hold 600 convicts, but is at present disused. The Earl of Guilford and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, are the principal landowners. The land in the parish is chalky and poor. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, and turnips. The area is 1,405 acres of land, 1 of water and 19 of foreshore; rateable value, £1,581; the population in 1901 was 550, including 167 in Fort Burgoyne and Barracks, and 59 in the Military Prison.

By Local Government Board Order, No. 31,658, dated 30 September, 1894, the rural part of the ancient civil parish of Charlton was annexed to Guston.
