Historical Description

HADLOW is a parish, 1 mile north from the navigable Medway and on the main road from Maidstone to Tonbridge, 4 north-east from Tonbridge station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 10 south-west from Maidstone, and 33 from London, in the South Western division of the county, Tonbridge petty sessional, union and county court district, Aylesford lathe, hundreds of Hadlow, Littlefield and Twyford, rural deanery of North Mailing, archdeaconry of Maidstone: the Bourne stream flows through the parish and the village is lighted with gas, supplied from Tonbridge. The church of St. Mary is of Kentish rag, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower with spire, containing a clock and 8 bells: there are two stained windows: the church affords 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1569. The living is a vicarage, net income £500, with residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1873 by the Rev. Phillips Howard Monypenny M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels, and an unsectarian gospel hall. A cemetery, containing 4 acres of ground with two mortuary chapels, was opened in 1881, and is under the control of the Parish Council. White’s charity of £9 yearly value, arising from lands and Consols left in 1619 by Robert White, of Hadlow, is for clothing, and Wells’s, of 21s. left in 1697, by John Wells, of Hadlow, is distributed in bread. The late Mrs. Rodger’s charity of £8 per annum, derived from Consols, provides 50 poor people with a dinner at Christmas. There are two breweries and several brickfields. Hadlow Castle, the property and seat of Benjamin Scott Foster MacGeaigh esq. J.P. is a mansion, in the Domestic Gothic style, and contains some fine suites of rooms, and a corridor 120 feet in length; the entrance hall and principal staircase are lighted by a large painted window representing “The Ascension”; there is a tower 150 feet high, commanding an extensive view; the noble park, covering about 200 acres, is intersected by the river Bourne. B. S. F. MacGeaigh esq. J.P. who is lord of the manors of Hadlow and East Peckham, J. P. Rodger esq. C.M.G. of Selangor, Malay Peninsula, O. E. d’Avigdor-Goldsmid esq. of Somerhill Park, and Thomas Lunham Boyd and Henry Simmons esqrs. are chief landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, various. The chief crops are hops, fruit and wheat. The area is 5,894 acres of land and 42 of water; rateable value, £12,969; the population in 1901 was 2,459.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 18 May 1881; William Stow, clerk to the board; William Croxford, attendance officer.

Board School (formerly National), built about 1840, for 184 boys, 151 girls & 125 infants; average attendance, 110 boys, 100 girls & 95 infants.
