Historical Description

HALLING is a parish on the west bank of the Medway, with a station on the North Kent line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 4 ½ miles, south-west from Rochester, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Shamwell hundred, Rochester petty sessional division and county court district, Strood union, and in the Cobham rural deanery and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. John the Baptist is in the Early English style, and has a tower, containing 5 bells: on the north wall of the nave is a brass to Silvester, wife of William Dalyson, ob. 1587; the church was restored and enlarged in 1888, at a cost of £2,100: a north porch has since been added and, in 1890, an organ chamber and vestry; in 1901 the organ was purchased at a cost of £280, and two screens erected: there are 450 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1705; marriages, 1706. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, with residence and 31 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester, and held since 1899 by the Rev. William Roberts. The mission church of St. Laurence, Upper Hailing, erected at the cost of Lieut.-Col. W. H. Roberts J.P. is an iron structure and has 150 sittings. There are also Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. The Working Men’s Club and Institute, erected in 1889, at a cost of about £1,600, includes a library of about 1,500 volumes and a concert hall seating about 300 persons; in connection with the club there is a swimming bath and indoor baths, opened in, 1893; a cricket and football ground, with pavilion, was opened in 1892. The Public Recreation Ground, 2 acres, 2 roods, 15 poles in extent was given by deed of conveyance, dated 9 January, 1896, by the late firm of Hilton, Anderson, Brooks & Co. Limited, in consideration of the consent of the Parish Council to the diversion of a footpath across the Cam. The works of the Mid Kent Waterworks Co. Limited, formed in 1889, were erected here in 1890. Lime burning and the manufacture of Portland cement are carried on here on a very extensive scale. George Knox Anderson esq. of Holly Wood, Frindsbury, who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Darnley, the trustees of Max Hammond Dalison esq. (d. 1902), and W. L. H. Roberts esq. J.P. of Holborough Court, Rochester, are the principal landowners. The soil is chalky; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,852 acres of land, 29 of tidal water and 27 of foreshore; rateable value, £18,113; the population in 1881 was 1,273; in 1891 2,095, and in 1901, 2,454.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 17 March, 1874; Charles Thomas Worsell, clerk; Tom Hilder, Snodland, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed & infants), erected in 1876, for 260 children & enlarged in 1888 for 50 additional; a new infants’ school for 203 children was completed, April, 1894; average attendance, 132 boys, 127 girls & 177 infants.
