Historical Description

At Harbledown, a small village about one mile from Canterbury, on our road, is an hospital, dedicated to St. Nicholas, founded and endowed by Archbishop Lanfranc, about the year 1084, for poor lepers. This hospital formerly possessed the fanciful relic, called St. Thomas Becket's slipper, mentioned by Erasmus, as the upper leather of an old shoe, adorned with crystals set in copper. The numerous pilgrims to the shrine of St. Thomas used to stop here, and reverence to this bauble was a preparation for the more solemn approach to his tomb. At the dissolution the revenues of the hospital amounted to 112l. 15s. 1d. They have been since increased to about 250l. annually. It has been continued for the relief of poor persons, and the number of inmates at present amounts to twenty-six. They are considered as freeholders, and enjoy distinct privileges as such. The entire establishment is for a master, fifteen in-brothers, and the like number of sisters; one of the former being called the prior, and one of the latter the prioress: the same number of out-brothers and sisters, and a reader, who is a clerk in orders.

The chapel, or church, of the hospital, appears to be the original Norman fabric, containing a curious intermixture of circular and pointed arches; it consists of a nave and chancel, with aisles opening to the nave, and a square tower at the southwest angle. The south aisle is separated from the nave by two semicircular and one pointed arch. The north aisle is divided from the nave by two pointed arches, and in its window has a good painting of St. John the Baptist, with a banner displaying the Agnes Dei. The font appears to be very ancient: it is of an octagonal form, ornamented with sculpture.

Harbledown church is a small, but ancient structure, dedicated to St. Michael.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HARBLEDOWN is a parish and village in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Westgate, lathe of St. Augustine, union of Bridge, county court district of Canterbury, Canterbury archdeaconry, rural deanery and diocese, and is situated on each side of the high road from the metropolis to Canterbury and 1 mile from the West Gate of the latter. The name is supposed to be derived from the variety of herbs for which the down was famous. The hospital of St. Nicholas was founded in 1084, by Archbishop Lanfranc, for lepers, and then comprised several wooden houses on the slope of a hill; it now consists of a range of cottages and gardens, with a large common hall in the centre and a chapel with a tower of flint, with stone quoins, containing some remains of the original Norman building: the hall contains many curious relics, most of them traditionally connected with St. Thomas a Becket: a prior, chaplain and sub-prior preside over the establishment; Henry Fielding esq. is the prior.

The church of St. Michael, Harbledown, was almost wholly rebuilt in 1880—1, at a cost of about £3,000: there are three stained windows and 450 sittings, about 50 being free. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1557 burials, 1561; marriages, 1562. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £320, with residence and 9 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Charles Hairby Barton of Queen’s College, Birmingham. Hall Place, the seat of Thomas Gilbert Peckham esq. D.L., J.P. is an Elizabethan mansion, standing in grounds of about 150 acres, finely timbered, and was greatly enlarged by Mr. Peckham on his purchasing the estate in 1861. Thomas Gilbert Peckham esq. who is lord of the manor, George Bowdler Gipps esq. of 23 Prince Edward’s mansions, Pembridge square, London W. the Dean and Chapter-of Canterbury, Earl Sondes and Earl Cowper K.G., P.C. are the principal landowners. The area of Harbledown is 1,642 acres of land and 2 of water; assessable value, £6,189; the population in 1901 was 971. The area of St. Nicholas Hospital is 70 acres; assessable value, £198; the papulation in 1901 was 26.
