Historical Description

HARRIETSHAM is a parish and pretty Tillage, at the foot of a chalk scarp, on the, river Len, a feeder of the Medway, and on the road from Maidstone to Ashford, with a station on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern;and Chatham, railway, and is 7 ½ miles south-east from Maidstone and 42 from London, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Eyborne hundred, Bearsted petty sessional division, Hollingbourn union, Maidstone county court district, rural deanery of Sutton. The church of St. John the Baptist is of Kentish rag and flint, chiefly in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower, of Perpendicular date, containing 8 bells: there are tombs of the Stede family, and a brass to Susan, wife of Edward Partheriche, 1603, with figures: a new organ was provided in 1895 at a post of £850: the church has been restored, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, with 62 acres of glebe land and residence, in the gift of All Souls College, Oxford, and held since 1888 by the. Rev. Cloudesley Dewar Bullock Marsham M.A.. of Merton College, Oxford. Harrietsham rectory chapel, at East Harrietsham, built in 1881, as a chapel of ease, will hold 120 persons. There are charities amounting to £22 yearly for bread, and £9 13s. 8d. for distribution in money arising from bequests made by the late Sir Charles Booth There are also some other small charities and, 12 almshouses, founded in 1642 by Mark Quested esq. a native of this place, for twelve poor persons; six of these are natives of London and receive 15s. each weekly, with coals; the other six are natives of Harrietsham, each receiving 6s. per week and coala. A fair used to be held here on June 24Th Stede Court, the property and seat of Lieut.-Col. Walter Reginald Rudge, is a handsome residence, on an eminence commanding extensive views of the Weald of Kent. The soil 1st chalk, clay and sandy; subsoil, various. The crops are wheat, oats, barley and hops. The area is 2,479 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £3,562; the population, in 1901 was 574.

Polhill (or Pool Hill) is half a mile south-west; Fairbourne, 1 mile south; Holm Mill, 1 mile west.

National School, with an endowment of £67 yearly, under the will of the late Sir Charles Booth; erected in 1842; average attendance, 100.
