Historical Description

HAYES is a village and parish, with a station on the South Eastern railway branch from Beckenham, 3 miles south from Bromley station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 13 from London, in the Western division of the county, within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court and Metropolitan Police, in Ruxley hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Bromley petty sessional division and union and county court district, rural deanery of West Dartford and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, is of hammered flint and stone in the later Early English style, and was restored and a north aisle added in 1856 at a cost of £2,500: the tower, containing a clock and 6 bells, was restored and a spire erected in 1862 and a south aisle and transept built in 1878: all the windows except one are stained: there are brasses, one with a demi-effigy and two others with full length effigies, to three former rectors, and a few monuments to the Scott, Gibbs and Traill families: the church affords about 420 sittings, of which about 350 are free. The register dates from the year 1539, and includes records of the baptism of the Rt. Hon. William Pitt, and of the marriage, about 1760, of James Bruce, the African traveller. The living is a rectory, net income £300, including 14 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1887 by the Rev. George Clowes M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are two charities, of about £6 yearly value, connected with the school, and a property, the gross rental of which is £100 yearly, has been apportioned by a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, two-thirds being allotted towards the support of the school and one-third given in money to the deserving poor by the Parish Council. Contiguous to the church is Hayes Place, formerly the seat of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, who died here 11 May, 1778; it was also the birthplace (28 May, 1759) of his son, William Pitt, the distinguished statesman, and is now occupied by Everard Alexander Hambro esq. J.P. Pickhurst Manor is the residence of Mrs. Devas. Major Sir Henry Arthur Hallam Farnaby Lennard bart. of Wickham Court, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are E. A. Hambro esq. Archibald C. Norman esq. of Bromley, and Charles E. Goodhart esq. of Langley Park. The soil is gravel and sand; subsoil, gravel and sand. The area is 1,281 acres; rateable value, £8,102; the population in 1901 was 838.

Hayes Common, comprising 200 acres, lies to the south of the village and is under the management of a board of conservators, first appointed in 1869 and elected annually. In Baston Manor House, now occupied by Capt. A. Torrens, some curious frescoes representing scenes in Saxon history were discovered about 1830.

Church of England School (mixed), established in 1780, & enlarged in 1895; it will hold 240 children; average attendance, 145.
