Historical Description

HEADCORN, in the Weald of Kent, is a parish and village, on the Beult, an affluent of the Medway, and on the road from Maidstone to Tenterden (the bridge over the stream is a primitive structure of timber, supported by brick piers and timber uprights), with a station on the South Eastern and Chatham main line of railway, 46 miles from London, via Sevenoaks and 9 south-east-by-south from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, lathes of Aylesford and Scray, hundreds of Eythorne, Teynham, Calehill, Cranbrook and Barkley, petty sessional division of Bearsted, Maidstone county court district, Hollingbourn union, and in the rural deanery of West Charing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is of Kentish rag in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing a clock and 8 bells: there is a fine Perpendicular tomb of the Colpepper family, one brass with the figure of a kneeling child to John, son of William Byrd, of Headcorne 1629-36, and remains of some very fine stained glass of the 15th century, exhibiting figures of saints, under canopies; the chantry chapel was founded in the 14th century by John and William Kent, and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin; the north window is a memorial to the late Charles Potter and his wife: the church was restored in 1855—78 at a cost of £1,000 and affords 500 sittings; in the churchyard is an oak of great age, measuring 40 feet in circumference. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1900 by the Rev. John Hankins Martin. St. John’s College, Cambridge, are impropriators of the rectorial tithes. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. Charities of about £50 yearly value, arising from lands left at various times between 1616 and 1716, are distributed in small pensions. Bricks and tiles are made in the parish. The Old Hall, a half-timbered structure, belonged at one time to the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers, of London. In this parish was Moddenden or Motynden, a house of Trinitarian or Crutched friars, founded in 1224 by Sir Robert de Rokesby. The manorial rights are divided. Lord Hothfield, J. H. Grant esq. Sir Robert Marcus Filmer bart. of 22 Lowndes street, London S W, Fiennes S. Wykeham Cornwallis esq. of Linton Park, and William Mercer esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The area is 5,055 acres of land, a small portion of which is devoted to the cultivation of hops, with some good pasturage bordering the river, and 22 of water; rateable value, £15,918; the population in 1901 was 1,405.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 27 June, 1871; Thomas Witherden Burden, clerk to the board; William J. Foord, attendance officer.

Board School (boys, girls & infants), established in 1873, for 410 children; there are on the books 300 children; average attendance, 86 boys, 63 girls & 51 infants.

Alfred Martin’s van for passengers & luggage leaves Headcorn, at 9 a.m. daily, sundays excepted, for Maidstone, returning same day from the ‘ Fortune of War,' at 4 p.m.

C. Pearson & Sons’ van to & from Maidstone & Smardeta passes through on tues, thurs. & sat. calling at Railway hotel about 9 a.m.; returning from Maidstone 4 p.m.
