Historical Description

HERNHILL is a well-wooded, picturesque and scattered parish on the acclivity of a hill, a little north of Watling Street, near Boughton-under-Blean, 3 ½ miles east of Faversham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 6 south-west from Whitstable, 6 north-west from Canterbury and 55 ½ from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, lathes of St. Augustine and Scray, hundreds of Boughton-under-Blean and Whitstable, Faversham petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Michael is of rough flint, in the Early Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing 8 bells; an ancient Perpendicular carved oak screen divides the chancel from the nave: there are piscinae, an aumbry, the remains of a rood loft and a pulpit of carved oak: the reredos, erected in 1885, is a memorial to Charles Warton esq.: the chancel was restored in 1867, at a cost of about £240, and the remainder of the building in 1877 at a cost of £1,400: the stained east window is a memorial to Jane Drake, 1853: the church plate bears the date 1667: there are 305 sittings. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £226, with glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Basil Broughton Smyth B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. The chapel of ease at Lamberts Land, erected by the Rev. Henry Swale in 1647, affords 100 sittings. The poor have £8 yearly in bread, derived from charges on, land and endowments left by Bethel Dawes and others. Kemsdale House is the seat of William Charles Dawes esq. J.P. Mount Ephraim, a spacious mansion of brick, is the residence and property of Sir Edwyn Sandys Dawes K.C.M.G., J.P.

Mountfield is the residence of Francis Gibbon Oliver esq. Court Lees, in a detached portion of the parish, is the property of the Hyder family. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor, and Sir Edwyn S. Dawes K.C.M.G. William C. Dawes esq. A. J. Gillott esq. and the Hon. H. A. Milles-Lade, of Nash Court, Boughton-under-Blean, are the largest landowners. The soil is stiff loam; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and peas; hops and fruit are grown here. The area is 2,820 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £6,515; in 1901 the population was 859.

Dargate, 1 mile north-east, has a small Wesleyan chapel, seating 80. Monks Hill is 1 ½ miles north; Way Street is 1 mile north-west: Waterham, half a mile north; The Fostal, half a mile north; Crockham, a quarter of a mile south-east; Staple Street, a quarter of a mile south; and Rough Hills, 2 ½ miles north.

National School (mixed), built, with master’s residence, in 1871, on a site given by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, at a cost of £800 and opened in March, 1872, & enlarged in 1896, for 216 children; average attendance, 160.
