In the church of Hever are many sepulchral memorials, among which is the altar tomb of "Sir Thomas Bollen, Knight of the order of the Garter, Erie of Wilscher," &c. who died in 1538. The effigies of the deceased, in brass, the size of life, is inlayed in the covering-slab of this monument. His tomb appears to have been opened, and the sides afterwards bricked up.
HEVER is a large parish of scattered houses, on the western confines of the Weald, midway between Chiddingstone and Edenbridge, with a station 1 mile south-west of the village, on the Tunbridge Wells branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 9 miles south-west from Sevenoaks, 10 west from Tonbridge, 11 north-west from Tunbridge Wells and 27 by road and 27 ½ by rail from London, in the South Western division of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, hundreds of Ruxley and Somerden, union of Sevenoaks, Tonbridge petty sessional division and county court district and in the rural deanery of Tonbridge and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The river Eden Hows across it towards. Penshurst, passing near the walls of Hever Castle, about a quarter of a mile north from the village. The church of St. Peter, which was restored in 1894, at a cost of about £1,500, is of stone, in the Transition style, and has a tower with spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: there is an altar tomb of marble, with effigy in brass, to Sir Thomas. Bullen or Boleyn K.G. Earl of Wiltshire and Ormond, and father of Queen Anne Boleyn, 1538, and a number of brasses and other memorials. The church was restored in, 1896—7, at a cost of about £1,300. The register dates from the year 1658. The living is a rectory, neb yearly value £315, with 16 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1890 by the Rev. Robert Charles Lathom Browne M.A. of Downing College, Cambridge. A joint isolation hospital, for this and the adjoining parishes of Chiddingstone, Cowden, Edenbridge, Leigh and Penshurst, is now (1902) in course of erection here. The charities, amounting to £15 a year, are derived from £500 in Consols, left in 1799 by Sir Timothy Waldo, of Hever, and distributed in clothing to those poor of the parish who do not receive alms. A sum of £8 derived from land in Lingfield, Surrey, is also distributed yearly in flannel; and there is a rent charge of 10s. on Chippens, for decayed farmers, and one of 10s. on Stoneylands, for the poor of Hever.
Hever Castle is, perhaps, one of the most interesting specimens of the Domestic architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries existing in England: it appears to have been erected in the reign of Edward I. 1275, by Thomas de Hever, who had liberty, by charter from the king, to embattle his mansion at Hever, and free warren annexed to his lands: Queen Anne Boleyn. was born here in 1509, in a room still remaining untouched: Anne of Cleves, another queen of Hen. VIII. is said to have died here. The inner buildings form a quadrangle, inclosing a small paved court, and the external elevations exhibit some fine gables with spacious bay windows: the great staircase communicates with various wainscoted chambers and a long gallery, at the upper end of which a part of the floor lifts up and discovers a narrow and gloomy descent, called “The Dungeon,” said to lead as far as the moat which surrounds the building: the castle is now the property of E. G. B. Meade-Waldo esq. and is occupied by Guy Sebright esq. J.P. The village reading room, a building of corrugated iron, was erected here in 1900. E. G. B. Meade-Waldo esq. of Stonewall Park, Chiddingstone, who is lord of the manor, Lieut.-Col. Henry Streatfeild, of Chiddingstone, and Lieut.-Col. Charles Stanley Williams, of Ivy House, Bough Beech, Edenbridge, are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats and peas. The area is 2,641 acres of land and 19 of water; assessable value, £3,833; civil population in 1901 was 723; ecclesiastical, 396.
Polebrook is a half mile north; How Green 1 mile, and Whistlers 1 ½ miles north.
National School (mixed), for 83 children; average attendance, 35 boys & 44 girls.
