Historical Description

HIGH HALSTOW is a parish and village, on high ground, hear the marshy borders of the Thames, with a station, Shamal Street, on the Hundred of Hoo branch railway, 5 miles east from Higham station on the North Kent section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 6 ½ north-east from Rochester, and 34 from London, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Hoo hundred and union, Rochester petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The village is supplied with water by the Higham and Hundred of Hoo Water Works Co. The church of St. Margaret dates from the 12th century, but was partly rebuilt in the Early English and Perpendicular periods: in 1894 a carved reredos was placed in the chancel as a memorial to the late Rev. Charles Longfield, rector 1885—93: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, net income £400, with residence and 6 acres of glebe, and in the gift of and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas William Longfield B.A. of St. David’s College, Lampeter, and Ridley Hall, Cambridge. There is a Bible Christian chapel at Fen street, erected in 1871. The charities amount to £40 yearly, arising from a house and land left in 1619 by John Cromp, of Hoo, for widows; £9 left by a late vicar; 30s. by Richard White Chalk, in 1622; 10s. by Nicholas Heard, in 1690, and 6s. 8d. from Bailey’s charity. The Earl of Jersey P.C., G.C.B., G.C.M.G, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of John Murton, Henry Pye esq. of Hoo St. Mary, the trustees of William Moore, the trustees of Col. Bingham, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Mean is a tract of 262 acres, belonging in moieties to High Halstow and St. Mary Hoo, but without any defined divisional line; opposite the Blythe Sands is a coastguard station. The soil is clay; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are radish and turnips seeds, potatoes, broccoli and hops: in the marshes are reed beds. The area is 2,885 acres of land, 60 of water, 706 of tidal water and 1,054 foreshore; rateable value, £3,078; the population in 1901 was 355.

Parochial (Endowed) School (mixed), erected in 1872, for 105 children; average attendance, 75; the endowment amounts to £6 yearly.
