The terminus of the Thames and Medway canal is in the parish. The church of St. Mary is chiefly in the Decorated style, with some Norman remains and examples of other styles, and has a small wooden belfry, containing 2 bells: there are several tombs and brasses, and two curious old chests; the north chancel aisle or chancel was formerly the chapel of the nunnery founded here in the reign of King Stephen: the church was renovated in 1863: and has 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net income £200, with residence and 2 acres of glebe, in the gift of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1898 by the Rev. John William Burrow M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The vicarage house was erected in 1878. An ancient causeway leads across the marshes to the Thames, over which was formerly a ferry, and the Shomemead battery, one of the defences of the river, is situated here. Near the station is a barrow. At Lillechurch, in this parish, was once a Benedictine nunnery, founded by King Stephen, before 1151, and sometime a cell to the monastery of St. Suluice at Bourges; it was suppressed by Fisher, bishop of Rochester, and was given by Henry VIII. to St. John’s College, Cambridge, who are now lords of the manor and the principal landowners.
