It is lighted with gas by a company formed in 1867. A tributary of the river Len flows through the parish. The church of All Saints is of flints, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower, containing a clock and 6 bells: there are tombs and other memorials to the Culpeppers, a mural monument to the Duppa family, one to the family of Barnham, and an ancient pulpit of wood, the embroidered velvet coverings for which and for the communion table were wrought by the Ladies Culpepper during the Commonwealth and presented at the Restoration: a new organ was provided in 1898 at a cost of £350: the church has been restored and a vestry built; there are 250 sittings, all being free except two faculty pews belonging to Richard Duppa de Uphaugh esq. of Hollingbourne House. A lych gate was erected in 1900, as a memorial to the late R. G. de V. Thomas esq. The register dates from the year 1556. The Working Men’s Club, established in the buildings of the old charity 'school, has 38 members. The Parish Hall, erected in 1901, is used for clubs, the sunday school, concerts and meetings. The charities, derived partly from land left by Dame Norton and partly from money left by Mrs. Long, are in the gift of the churchwardens for the time being: there is also a sum for apprenticing. Near the church is an ancient house, formerly a part of a monastic building, erected about 1340; until recently it was a public house, but in 1900 the vicar bought the property from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and it is now a private residence. The Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, who are lords of the manor, the Fishmongers’ Company, R. D. de Uphaugh esq. Walter T. Fremlin esq. of Milgate Park, Bearsted, and the trustees of the late R. G. de Visme Thomas esq. are the chief landowners. The surface soil is red loam, overlaying the chalk; underneath is blue lias. The chief crops are hops, corn, fruit and roots. The area is 4,605 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £6,053; and the population, including 13 officers and 108 inmates in the union, in 1901 was 945 in the civil, and 869 in the ecclesiastical parish.
