Historical Description

HOTHFIELD is a parish and village, on the high road from Ashford to Maidstone, with a station on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 miles north-west from Ashford, 57 by rail and 50 by road from London; the river Stour runs along the south side of the parish, which is in the Southern division of the county, Chart and Longbridge hundreds, lathe of Scray, Ashford petty sessional division and county court district, West Ashford union, and in the rural deanery of East Charing, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. This place, since 1881, has given the title of baron to the Tufton family, baronets; and previously Barons Tufton (1626) and Earls of Thanet (1628), but the latter title became extinct on the death of Henry, 11th earl, in 1849. The church of St. Mary is of stone in various styles, the Norman, Early English, Decorated and Late Perpendicular being all represented, and has a tower with spire containing 5 bells: there is a stained window and monuments with figures and various tablets to the Tufton family and others: the church, partly burnt at the end of the 16th century, and rebuilt in 1624, was restored in 1876. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £260, with 28 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Hothfield, and held since April, 1894, by the Rev. Harry Wright Russell B.A. of the University of London. Various legacies, amounting altogether to about £80 yearly, have been left to the poor of this parish by the Tufton family. There is a common of about 250 acres, partly in this parish, bub extending into the adjoining parish of Westwell. Hothfield Place, the ancient seat of the Tuftons, Earls of Thanet, and the residence of Lord Hothfield D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, is a large mansion of stone surrounded with 350 acres of park land, commanding lovely views; the river Stour flows through the park, and supplies a small lake. The soil is light; subsoil, loamy. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and oats. The area is 1,815 acres of land and 14 of water; rateable value, £4,532; the population in 1901 was 328.

Endowed School, built by Lord Hothfield in 1874, and enlarged in 1884, for 210 children; average attendance, 125; endowed with £60 yearly and master's house, by Margaret, Countess of Thanet (c. 1630), & others.
