Historical Description

HUNTON is a village and parish, near the junction of the Beult (over which there is a bridge) and Teise with the navigable Medway, 3 miles east from Yalding station on the Rochester and Paddock Wood section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 51 from London, 5 south-west-by-south from Maidstone, in the South Western division of the county, hundreds of Twyford and Maidstone, lathe of Aylesford, petty sessional division of Mailing, Maidstone union and county court district, rural deanery of North Mailing and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Mary is of stone in the Early English and Norman styles, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and 6 bells: there are monuments to the noble family of Fane, and a memorial window to Gen. Drummond and Robert Alexander esq.: the interior was restored and reseated in 1876, and affords 300 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1585. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £550, including 22 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Louis Henry Bradford M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Dr. Beilby Porteus, bishop of London (1787—1809), left £1,000 in £3 per Cent. Consols, the interest of which is for six poor cottagers; and there is another sum of £1,000, the interest of which is to be used toward the maintenance of a schoolmaster and schoolmistress. Hunton Court, the property of the Right Hon. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman P.C., G.C.B., M.P. is a mansion pleasantly situated in a well-wooded park of 12 acres and now occupied by Edward Wylam esq. Gennings is the residence of Lord James Arthur Wellington Foley Butler J.P.; the park is 50 acres in extent. Buston House, formerly the property of the noble family of Fane, is now occupied by Mr. James Somerset Turner as a farm house. The Right Hon. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman G.C.B., P.C., M.P. of 6 Grosvenor place, London SW, who is lord of the manor, Viscount Falmouth William Whibley Hubble esq. and Mrs. Alexander are the chief landowners. The soil is of a rich arable nature in the valley and becomes more stiff as it approaches the ragstone range, which runs towards the northern boundary of the parish. The area is 2,062 acres of land, a large portion of which are hop plantations, and 13 of water; rateable value, £4,776; the parish contained in 1901 a population of 821.

National School, built in 1837, for 120 children; average attendance, 127; the school was endowed by Bishop Porteus, as stated above; the ground & buildings were given by Robert Moore M.A. in 1837.
