Historical Description

ICKHAM (anciently called Yecham) is a parish and considerable village, situated on the lesser Stour and on the old road to Deal and Sandwich, 2 ½ miles north-east from the Bekesbourne station of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, about 5 east from Canterbury, and 61 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, Downhamford hundred, petty sessional division of Wingham, Bridge union, Canterbury county court district, rural deanery of East Bridge and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. John the Evangelist is of flint in the Early English style, and has a tower with spire, containing a clock and 4 bells; the interior was thoroughly restored in 1901 at a cost of £1,500; there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Well annexed, net yearly value £580 with residence, including the rent of 17 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Matthew Alexander Nisbet M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge, and ad eundem, Oxford, and hon. canon of Canterbury. The rectory house is a large and picturesque building dating in part from the reign of Henry VII. The charities amount to £31 yearly, derived from Consols. Howletts, situated near the hamlet of Wells, is the property of George Bowdler Gipps esq. but now in the occupation of Robert Ramsay esq.; there are grounds of 4 acres. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, Mrs. Philips, the Marquess Conyngham, and George Bowdler Gipps esq. J.P. of Prince Edward mansions, Palace court, London W, are the principal landowners. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, gravel and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, hops and barley. The area is 2,210 acres of land and 9 of water; assessable value, £3,595; the population in 1901 was 549.
