Historical Description
IFIELD is a small parish, on the old Watling Street road from London to Rochester, 2 miles south from Gravesend stations on the North Kent (South Eastern and Chatham) railway, 7 north-west from Rochester and 24 from London, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Toltingtrough, Aylesford lathe, Strood union, county court district of Gravesend, petty sessional division of Rochester and in the rural deanery of Gravesend and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. Margaret is in the Gothic style, and has a wooden belfry with spire containing one bell; the church retains an ancient brass and five modern stained windows; it was redecorated in 1596 and in 1838 was completely restored and reseated and a new spire was erected in 1892; there are 70 sittings, of which 43 are free. The register dates from the year 1751. The living is a rectory, with that of Nurstead annexed, joint net yearly value £150, with 8 ½ acres of glebe here and residence erected in 1865, in the gift of Maj.-Gen. Henry Edmeades, of Nurstead, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Charles Johnson Gibson M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. Hever Court is the residence of Arthur Frederick William Johnson esq. Thomas Colyer Colyer-Fergusson esq. of Ightham Mote, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. There is no village near the church, the population being at Singlewell, a village partly in Ifield parish and the remainder in the parish of Northfleet. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are grain and hops. The area is 313 acres; rateable value, £644; the population in 1901 was 55.
