Historical Description

In the parish of Ightham, nearly contiguous to Wrotham, is Oldbury Bill, where are the remains of a considerable entrenchment, which is without doubt of Roman origin. It is situated on the top of the hill, and is now so much overgrown with wood as to make it very diflicult to trace the lines of it.—It is of an oval form, and contains within its limits the space of one hundred and thirty-seven acres.—From the great extent of the area, and the irregularity of the outlines, there is no doubt but that this encampment was formed by the Romans on the site of a previous British fortress.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

IGHTHAM (the island home, A.S. eyot) is a village and parish, on the roads from Dartford to Tonbridge and Maidstone to Godstone, 1 mile south-west from Wrotham station on the Ashford section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 5 miles east from Sevenoaks, 12 west from Maidstone and 27 from London, in the Mid division of the county, Wrotham hundred, lathe of Aylesford, union and petty sessional division of Mailing, Sevenoaks county court district and in the rural deanery of Shoreham and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Peter is an edifice in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing 6 bells: there is an effigy in armour, several fine monuments, with effigies, to the Selby family, former owners of the Mote, some brasses and several stained windows: the church affords 250 sittings, 200 being free. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, with 9 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1888 by the Rev. Douglas Barry M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. Charities, producing £7 10s. yearly, are distributed in bread. A fair is held on Wednesday in Whitsun week, called Cockscombo fair. In the neighbourhood is Oldbury hill, probably a British camp, the entrenchments occupied 137 acres; in the centre of the inclosure are two fine springs. Ightham Court is at present (1903) unoccupied. Oldbury Place, the property of the Right Hon. George John Shaw-Lefevre P.C., J.P. of Kingsworthy, Hants, is at present the residence of Ralph Brown esq. Ightham Mote, now the residence of Thomas Colyer Colyer-Fergusson esq. J.P. is perhaps the finest specimen of a moated mansion in the south of England and is not unlike its neighbour, Hever Castle, in its general outlines and its old hall and chapel are both perfect; it belonged in the reign of Henry H. to Ivo de Haut, or Eyot, and in 1478 and 1482 to Richard de Haut; it was next held for some time by the Cawne family and the oldest portions of the existing house were probably built by Sir Thomas Cawne of that family; in 1485 it was restored to the de Hauts by Henry VII. and in 1521 was purchased by Sir Richard Clement, of Milton, who in turn disposed of it in 1544 to Sir John Allen, and his descendant, Charles Alien esq. sold it at the end of Queen Elizabeth’s reign to Sir William Selby and it continued in that family till 1888, the late representative being Mrs. Lewis Maryanne Luard-Selby, daughter and co-heir of Prideaux J. Selby esq. and widow of the late Maj. Robert Luard-Selby J.P. d. 1880. At the northern extremity of the parish, in the midst of very picturesque grounds, is the large and ancient mansion of St. Clere, the property and residence of Sir Mark Wilks Collet bart. D.L., J.P. Ightham Warren, standing in about 250 acres of well timbered ground, is the property and residence of Frank William Monckton esq. and Ivy Hatch Court is the property and residence of Theodore Michael Zarifi esq. The principal landowners are Sir M. W. Collet bart. William Marshall Cazalet esq. of Tonbridge, F. W. Monckiton esq. and T. M. Zarifi esq. The soil is sandy; subsoil, green sand and stone. The chief crops are small fruits, hops, cereals and cobnuts. The area is 2,605 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £7,701; the population in 1901 was 1,286.

Borough Green, partly in this parish, is three-quarters of a mile north-east, on the road from Sevenoaks to Maidstone; Ivy Hatch, a mile and a half south; Crown Point, 1 mile south-west; Oldbury, half a mile west; Ightham Common, 1 mile south-west.

A School Board was established 2 Oct. 1875 & consists of 5 members; Frederick J. Allison, West Mailing, clerk to the board; Robert Crowson, Ightham, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1846, for 200 children; average attendance, 187.
