Historical Description

KEMSING is a village and parish, partly in the valley and partly in the chalk hills eastward from Otford, with a station 1 ½ miles south-east from the village on the Maidstone line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 2 ½ miles north-east from Sevenoaks and 23 ½ from London, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Codsheath lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Sevenoaks and in the rural deanery of Shoreham and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The village stands at a short distance from the Pilgrim's Way at the foot of the hills, and near the centre of it is a well called St. Edith’s Well. The church of St. Mary is of stone in the Early English style, and has a tower, with spire, containing 3 bells; the windows retain fragments of stained glass, and there is an ancient screen and a brass with half effigy, besides some mural monuments: the nave was restored in 1870, at a total cost of £345 and the chancel, in 1873, at a further cost of £143 18s. In 1890 the church was restored and enlarged at a total cost of £3,000: there are 280 sittings. The register dates from the year 1535. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £58, with residence, in the gift of Lord Sackville, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Thomas Carleton Skarratt M.A. of Downing College, Cambridge. The impropriate tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £179. There is an iron chapel of ease at Noah’s Ark erected in 1887, and a Wesleyan chapel erected in 1885. Beechy Lees, at present unoccupied, is the property of Cuthbert A. Morris Field esq. of Ashurst Park, Tunbridge Wells. Lord Sackville G.C.M.G, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Cuthbert A. M. Field esq. Sir Mark Wilks Collet bart. of St. Clere, Ightham, and Maj. J. M. Rogers, of Riverhill House, Sevenoaks. The soil is chalk, upper greensand and clay; subsoil, at the base of hill, gault clay. The chief crops are cereals and roots, hops are grown here. The parish is about two miles square and contains 1,909 acres; assessable value, £2,637; the population in 1901 was 644.
