Historical Description

In the parish of Keston, about two miles south by west from Farnborough, is Holwood House, formerly the seat of the late Right Hon. William Pitt. Holwood Hill is surrounded by much rough ground, on the northern side of which is an ancient Roman camp, near which the river Ravensborne takes its rise, on Keston common, at a small distance to the west of the camp, and directs its course through this parish, between those of Hayes and Bromley.

The remains of the above mentioned camp, which is certainly the finest piece of antiquity in all these parts, consist of a large and strong fortification, of an oblong form, commanding an extensive view on every side. The area is partly enclosed with rampiers and double ditches, of a vast height and depth. It is described by Hasted as being nearly two miles in circumference; but from a recent examination, that would appear to be an exaggerated statement. One side of the innermost vallum is, by measurement, about 800 paces in length. Traces of ancient foundation, together with Roman tiles, and miscellaneous antiquities, referable to that people, have been here found, several of which are now in the possession of Alfred Kempe, Esq. of Bromley Coins of the middle and lower empire have likewise been picked up frequently, by those whose curiosity has led them to examine this place. From the western aperture are the remains of a plain way, down towards the spring head of the river Ravensbourne, which lies at a very small distance on the northwest; by which the soldiers were well supplied with water. It has been observed, by a very tasteful and judicious writer, that "the hand of time, and the wild graces of nature, have conferred on 'these ancient bulwarks an appearance of the most romantic description." it may be added, that the vicinity of the metropolis presents few objects of antiquity so grand and curious, yet so little known or visited.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

KESTON is a scattered parish, pleasantly situated on high ground, extending to the borders of Surrey, on the road from Bromley to Westerham, about 3 ½ miles south from Bromley stations on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 13 ½ from London: it is in the Western division of the county, Huxley hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Bromley petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of West Dartford and archdeaconry of Maidstone, and is within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan police. The church is of flint and brick in the Norman and Early English styles, and has a stone bell-cote containing one bell: the church was restored and enlarged in 1877 and again repaired in 1881, and has 170 sittings, 40 being free: in the churchyard is buried Mrs. George Lillie Craik (Miss Dinah Maria Muloch), authoress of “John Halifax, Gentleman,” and many other well-known works, who died 12 Oct. 1887. The register dates from the year 1541. The living is a discharged rectory, net income £157, with residence and 8 acres of land, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Charles Howard Wright M.A., of Lincoln College, Oxford. St. Audrey’s is a private chapel built by the 1st Lord Sackville in 1888; services, to which the neighbouring cottagers are admitted, are held here by the rector of Keston: adjoining is a building containing a reading room, gymnasium and bath for the use of men and boys. At Keston there is a Wesleyan chapel. At Holwood Hill, in this parish, half a mile north-east, are traces of an entrenchment, near which various implements of war have been found as well as Roman bricks, tiles and coins: it was inclosed with three earthen ramparts and ditches, 2 miles in circumference, parts of which remain. In. the parish is a well or spring of fine water, called “Caesar’s Well,” or the “Roman Bath ’’ and forming the head of the Ravensbourne. In 1828, at Lower Warbank, on Blackness farm, the remains of a circular temple or tomb were found, 30 feet through from side to side, the walls being of flint and tiles. In Oct. 1854, the remains of a British village, with a Roman villa built on it and the remains of a circular temple, which are still open, were found here. Some suppose this to be the Roman station Noviomagus; and a club has been formed, called the “Noviomagian Society of Antiquaries, ’’ for its exploration.

Holwoood, the residence of the Earl of Derby K.G., G.C.B., P.C. is a mansion of brick and Portland stone in the Classic style, built in 1825, from the designs of Decimua Burton esq. architect, and is surrounded by a beautifully wooded park of 125 acres. Keston common adjoins that of Hayes, and is “an open breezy space, covered with gorse and broom and abounding in wild flowers, fern and bracken;” adjoining it are some large ponds and an old windmill. Major Sir Henry Arthur Hallam Farnaby Lennard bart. of West Wickham, who is lord of the manor, and the Earl of Derby, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravel; subsoil, mixed. The area is 1,479 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £5,055; the population in 1901 was 832.

National School, erected about 1855, enlarged in 1879, for 140 children; average attendance, 130.
