Historical Description

KNOCKHOLT is a parish and straggling but pleasant village, 2 ½ miles south from Knockholt station on the Tonbridge section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 6 miles north-west from Sevenoaks, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Ruxley, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Bromley petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Shoreham and archdeanery of Maidstone. The church of St. Catherine is of flint and brick, and has a tower containing a clock and 2 bells; there are several memorial windows; the interior was renovated in 1863 at a cost of about £500, and in 1881 a north aisle was built and the church restored at a cost of £1,012; there are 250 sittings, 150 being free. The register dates from the year 1548. The living was declared a rectory Oct. 30, 1866, net yearly value £220, with residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Frederick Havard Jones M.A of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel here was built in 1887, and there are Bible Christian and Calvinistic chapels. Miss Thrale, of Ash Grove, Knockholt, bequeathed in Nov. 1858, to the incumbent for the time being, an annuity of £25, and another annuity of £25 for a curate whenever one is required, but the last-named sum is now equally distributed among five poor widows; this lady also bequathed £50 a year to be spent each Christmas Eve in bread, meat and warm clothing at the discretion of the trustees, and a further annuity of £50 towards educating poor children. On a hill in this neighbourhood is a clump of remarkable old trees, known as the Knockholt Beeches, which stand 770 feet above the level of the sea, and are visible for many miles. In the parish, a reservoir, constructed in 1889—90 by the Kent Water Works Company, the water being pumped from wells at Orpington, about 5 ½ miles distant. The principal landowners are Earl Stanhope F.S.A, the Right Hon. Sir William Hard-Dyke bart. P.C., M.P. who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late Major Daniel Norton (d. 1902), Mrs. Henry Turner, Thomas Frederick Burnaby-Atkins esq. and Sampson Copestake esq. of Shermanbury Place, Sussex. The soil is strong loam; subsoil, chalk:. The chief crops are pasture and fruit. The area is 1,701 acres; rateable value, £4,968; the population in 1901 was 952.

National School (mixed), built in 1902, for children; average attendance, 166; the school has an endowment of £50 yearly as above mentioned.
