Historical Description
In the parish of Leeds there was a priory of black canons, founded by Robert de Crevequer, about the year 1119, which was granted by Edward VI. to Sir Anthony St. Leger.
Leeds Castle is a magnificent pile of building, being all formed of stone, at several times and in different styles of architecture; notwithstanding which it cannot be seen without admiration and pleasure. It is situated in a beautiful park, surrounded with a large moat, or running water, which rises at Lenham, and empties itself into the Medway : in this water there is great plenty of fish, especially pike, some of which grow to the size of thirty or forty pounds. In November, 1779, the present king and queen lodged here, after reviewing the camp at Coxheath. It has frequently been asserted, that Richard 11. was imprisoned in this castle; but this is a mistake, as it was undoubtedly at Leeds in Yorkshire where that unfortunate monarch was confined. In the reign of Henry V. Joan of Navarre, the second queen of Henry IV. being accused of conspiring against the life of her son-in-law, was sent prisoner to this castle, and afterwards carried by Sir John Pelham, her keeper, to Pevensey. In the reign of Henry VI. Archbishop Chicheley sat here during the process against Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester, for sorcery and witchcraft. This interesting castellated residence is now the seat of General Martin; but it appears that little care is bestowed on its preservation. The attached grounds are extensive and fine.
LEEDS is a village and parish, 2 ½ miles south from Hollingbourne station on the Maidstone and Ashford branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 5 south-east from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, Eyhorne hundred, lathe of Aylesford, Bearsted petty sessional division, Maidstone county court district, Hollingbourn union, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The river Len flows through the parish. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower of very Early English character, with spire, and containing a clock and 10 bells: there are screens of carved oak: the church was restored in 1879, and has two stained windows: the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1575. The living is a vicarage, with that of Broomfield annexed, joint net yearly value £210, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Adolphus Philipse Morris M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The rectorial tithes are held by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. Leeds Castle, the seat of Cornwallis Philip Wykeham-Martin esq. J.P. is in the parish of Broomfield, which see. The Abbey of SS. Mary and Nicholas here was founded by Robert de Crevecoeur (Croucheart) in 1119, for canons of the Augustinian order: the abbey lands are now the property of C. P. Wykeham-Martin esq. Battle Hall, adjoining the church, is supposed to have been built in the reign of Edward II.; it is now occupied as a farmhouse. C. P. Wykeham-Martin esq. and Sir Robert Marcus Filmer bart. of 22 Lowndes street, London S W, who are lords of the manor, are the chief landowners, but there are several other smaller owners. The soil is loam; subsoil, ragstone. The chief crops are wheat, fruit and hops. The area is 1,645 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £3,362; the population in 1901 was 650.
National School, for the parishes of Leeds & Broomfield (mixed), built in 1873, for 160 children; average attendance, 130; & supported by Cornwallis P. Wykeham-Martin esq. J.P. & by voluntary rate.
