LEIGH is a parish, on the river Medway and the road from Loudon to Penshurst, 1 ½ miles south from Hildenborough station on the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge line branch, 2 east from Penshurst station on the Croydon and Tonbridge section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 4 west from Tonbridge, 6 south from Sevenoaks and 30 from London, in the South Western division of the county, hundreds of Codsheath and Washlingstone, lathes of Aylesford and Sutton-at-Hone, Tonbridge petty sessional division and county court district, Sevenoaks union, rural deanery of Tonbridge and archdeaconry of Maidstone. A nameless stream rises near Wickhurst. The church of St. Mary is of flint and stone, in the Early English style, with some later insertions, and has a tower of Perpendicular character containing 5 bells: there is a small brass with symbolical figures, an ancient hour-glass stand, and several windows are stained: the chancel was restored in 1861, and the church in 1892, at a cost of £1,300; it affords about 204 sittings. The register dates from the year 1639. The living is a vicarage, net income about £230, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of S. Hope Morley esq. and held since 1876 by the Rev. Hugh Robert Collum, of St. Bees, M.R.I.A., F.R.G.S. A vicarage house was built in 1877. The impropriate tithes, which for the most part belong to Lord de L'lsle and Dudley, and to a smaller extent to the Earl of Derby, have been commuted for a rent-charge of £558 15s. An undenominational chapel was erected in 1871, with Sunday schools attached, at the expense of the late Samuel Morley esq. (d. 1886). The charities include property left by C. Budgen and three cottages by Saxby together of the yearly value of £73, for the use of the poor, and there are two other charities, of the yearly value respectively of £29 and £17, and distributed in money. In this parish is a mineral spring, possessing properties similar to those of the springs at Tunbridge Wells. Hall Place, the seat of S. Hope Morley esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor, is a handsome Elizabethan mansion of red brick with stone dressings, in a well-wooded park of nearly 200 acres. The principal landowners are Lord de L'lsle and Dudley, S. H. Morley esq. O. E. D’Avigdor-Goldsmid esq. of Somerhill Park, and Arnold Hills esq. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are hops, fruit, wheat and oats, with a considerable portion of pasture and meadow land.
