Historical Description

LINTON is a parish and picturesque village, delightfully situated on an eminence, on the road from Maidstone to Cranbrook, 3 miles from Farleigh station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 4 south from Maidstone, in the Mid division of the county, petty sessional division of Bearsted, hundred, union and county court district of Maidstone, lathe of Aylesford, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of St. Nicholas, originally a Norman structure, to which additions were made in the time of Edward III. was enlarged and restored in 1860, and has a tower of Kentish ragstone with spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: there is a rich screen of carved oak, and monuments to the Cornwallis, Mayne and Mann families: the church affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £165, with one acre of glebe and residence, in the gift of F. S. W. Cornwallis esq. and held since 1901 by the Rev. Frederick Archibald Gresham Leveson-Gower B.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. There are almshouses for eight persons maintained by Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis esq. The Maidstone Union Workhouse is at Cox Heath in this parish. Linton Park, the seat of Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis esq. D.L., J.P. chief landowner and lord of the manor, is surrounded by a well-wooded park of about 385 acres. The soil is for the most part clay, and produces hops and fruit. The area is 1,953 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £4,925; the population in 1901 was 856 in the ecclesiastical and 912 in the civil parish, including 30 officials and 306 inmates in Maidstone Union Workhouse.

Loddington was transferred to this parish from Maidstone by Local Government Board Order 14,186, dated 25 March, 1883.

National Schools (boys & girls), built in 1844 & enlarged in 1864, for 150 children; average attendance, 127.
