Historical Description

LITTLEBOURNE is a village and parish, on a branch of the Little Stour and on the road from London to Sandwich, a mile and a half from Bekesbourne railway station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 4 miles east from Canterbury, and 60 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, partly within the county of the city of Canterbury, Downhamford hundred, lathe of St. Augustine, petty sessional division of Wingham, Bridge union, county court district of Canterbury, rural deanery of East Bridgs and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The village occupies part of the highway and a cross street. The church of St. Vincent is of flint, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and 6 bells: the church was restored and re-seated about 1860, and contains memorials to the Dennes: there are 350 sittings. A lich-gate was erected at the entrance to the churchyard in 1894 by the Rev. N. H. McGachen B.A. vicar 1881—99, in memory of Mrs. McGachen, and in 1896 a new porch was built as a memorial to the same lady. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1559, marriages from 1560. The living is a vicarage, net income £237, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Robert Patterson M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge Here is a Congregational chapel, built in 1814, and has 150 sittings. The charities amount to £18 yearly, derived from Consols and a small piece of land. There is a village lending library of 600 volumes. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor, the trustees of Henry Denne esq. Mrs. Philips, and John Knowler Pembrook esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and hops. The area is 2,486 acres of land, 5 of water, 2 of tidal water and 1 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,765; the population in 1901 was 877 in the civil and 845 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 23,641, dated March 25, 1894, Park Houses in Wickhambreux parish have been transferred to Littlebourne for civil purposes.

National School (mixed), built in 1871, & enlarged in 1895 for 205 children; average attendance, 144.
