Historical Description

LOOSE is a picturesque village and parish, on the high road from Maidstone to Cranbrook and surrounded by hop and fruit gardens, and is in the Loose stream, 2 ½ miles south from Maidstone, the nearest station, on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the Mid division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, petty sessional division of Bearsted, hundred, county court district and union of Maidstone, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The church of All Saints is of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has tower with spire containing a clock and 3 bells: in Jan. 1878, the interior fittings and roof were completely destroyed by fire, but were restored in the same year, and in 1888 the church was restored at a cost of £1,050: there are 600 sittings, 80 being free. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Waterman Gardner-Waterman M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Baptist chapel, erected in 1880, with 280 sittings. Maidstone Rural District Infectious Diseases Hospital was partly built in 1895, at a cost of about £150, for 24 patients. It is only opened in the hop picking reason. The Loose stream turns several paper and corn mills and here is also a brewery. To the south are some stone quarries. Hayle Place is the seat of Col. Thomas Henry Pitt J.P. W. S. Foster esq. who is lord of the manor and J. R. Coles esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, Tag stone. The chief crops are hops and fruit. The area is 1,043 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £5,973; the population in 1901 was 1,509 civil, and 1,363 ecclesiastical.

By Local Government Board Order 20,929, dated March 24, 1887, Filmer’s Wood and Quarry Wood were transferred from East Farleigh to this parish.

Well Street is a part of the village; Haile (or Hayle), a mile and a half north; Shernold Pond, 1 mile north-east.

National School, built in 1840 & since enlarged, for 200 children; average attendance, 192.
