Historical Description

Lower Halstow, a small village; the church is remarkable for the great quantity of Roman tile worked into the lower parts of the walls. Stand-gate Creek, in this parish, is the station assigned by government for the performance of Quarantine.

LOWER HALSTOW is a village and parish, near a creek of the Medway, on which it has a quay, 2 miles north from Newington station on the South Eastern and Chatham line, 4 ½ north-west from Sittingbourne, and 7 ½ east from Chatham, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and union of Milton, lathe of Scray, Faversham petty sessional division, Sittingbourne county court district, rural deanery of Sittingbourne, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Margaret is of flint and stone in the Early English style, and has a tower, containing 3 bells: the chancel was restored in 1879: the church has 200 sittings, all being free. The early registers appear to have been lost: the date of the oldest remaining is 1691. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £250, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Edward Robert Olive Assoc King’s College, London. The charities amount to £26 yearly, arising from land. Here is a Bible Christian chapel. C. P. Wykeham-Martin esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, Lord Harris G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E. and Henry L. Webb esq. of Tunstall. The soil is principally brick earth; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are fruit and wheat, with some land in pasture. The area is 1,355 acres of land, 4 of water, 51 of tidal water, and 371 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,352; the population in 1901 was 650 chiefly employed in brick making.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 23 Feb. 1875; Harry Grensted, Sittingboume, clerk to the board; Alfred Walter Carlton, attendance officer.

Board Schools (mixed), erected in 1876 & enlarged in 1884, for 200 children; average attendance, 162.
