Historical Description

Lydd, about three miles south from New Romney, is said to owe its rise to the inhabitants of Bromhill, who settled here when the sea demolished their town. It is situated about three miles and a half from the lighthouse at Dengeness. It is a corporation, governed by a bailiff, jurats, &c. On the beach here is a heap of stones, called by the common people the tomb of Crispin and Crispianus. Lydd has a small market on Thursdays.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LYDD (anciently named “Hlyden”) is a small town, municipal borough and parish, situated in marsh land on the coast of the English Channel and at the southern extremity of the county, with a station on the Lydd and Dungeness branch of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and is 17 miles south from Ashford, 4 south-west from New Romney, 29 south from Canterbury, 19 south-west from Folkestone and 72 from London, in the Southern division of the county, liberty and union of Romney Marsh, lathe of Shepway, petty sessional division of Lydd, New Romney county court district, rural deanery of South Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The municipal government was formerly vested in a bailiff, jurats and freemen, who from old times were called archbishop’s men; but in 1855 the town received a charter of incorporation and is now governed under the provisions of the “Municipal Corporations Act, 1835” (5 and 6 William TV. c. 76), and the “Borough of Lydd Scheme, 1885,” framed under 46 and 47 Vic. c. 18, s. 7 (June 30, 1885), the Corporation consisting of a mayor, 4 aldermen and 12 councillors. Lydd enjoys all the privileges of the Cinque Ports from its being attached to New Romney, of which it is a member. A small portion of the parish is within the jurisdiction of the borough of New Romney. The town is lighted with gas by the Lydd Gas and Coke Company Limited, established in 1867, and supplied with water from two parish and private pumps. The church of All Saints is of stone, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower 132 feet in height, containing a clock and 5 bells: there are many brasses, the effigy of a cross-legged knight, dated 1352, some monuments and five stained windows: extensive alterations were made in 1887 at a cost of £1,500, and at the same time a new churchyard was consecrated: there are about 1,200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1542. The living is a rectory and vicarage, net yearly value £750, with 29 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Arthur Octavius Hardy M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1886, at a cost of £1,450, will seat 400 persons. There is a Catholic chapel dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, and a Baptist chapel, with 100 sittings. The fair, once held here on the last Monday in July, is now abolished. Harte’s charity of about £115 yearly, derived from a farm, left by Thomas Harte, of Lydd, ob. 1557, is applied for the repair of the church, for public uses, and relief of the poor, in equal parts. The Grange is the residence of Mrs. Alured Denne. There is no lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Capt. F. W. Forester, of Rockliffe Park, Darlington, Lord Hothfield, Mrs. Alured Denne, Edwin Finn esq. the War Department and All Souls’ College, Oxford. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in agriculture, and in grazing vast numbers of sheep on the rich marshes in the vicinity, calculated to contain 50,000 acres, while nearly 6,000 acres of the parish consists of shingle: the sea, gaining in the west bay, has covered the Abnor and Wigmore pits; the other part is grazing land Tunning out seaward in narrow tongues, under the name of “The Rypes,” half a mile from the town, on which a military camp has been formed. There are barracks for 500 men of the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers only. Rifle ranges after the Bisley style, connected throughout by telephone, were opened at Holmstone Camp in 1900. A permanent hospital was erected in 1893, and there is a Soldiers’ Home in High street. Turnip seed is extensively grown. There is a brewery here. The area of the parish is 11,980 acres of land, 63 of water, and 821 of foreshore; rateable value, £8,325; the population in 1901 was 2,675, including 427 in Holmstone Camp, and 95 on board vessels.

DUNGENESS, 4 miles from Lydd, is a point of land formed by the movement of the shingle to this spot, and is very dangerous to shipping, but the east and west bays on either side afford good anchorage. The Dungeness Lighthouse was erected in 1792, at the sole expense of the Earl of Leicester (d. 1842), and under the superintendence of the late Mr. Wyatt. Lloyd’s signalling station is adjacent. There are batteries of the coast brigade here and coastguard stations. The branch line of railway from Appledore on the South Eastern and Chatham railway to this place passes through to a point about a hundred yards north-east of the lighthouse, which is the nearest point on the English coast to the Continent, being only 20 miles from Cape Grisnez. Fishing is carried on here to some extent.
