Historical Description

LYMINGE (or Liminge) is an extensive parish and small village, with a station on the Elham Valley line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 73 miles from London, 5 north from Hythe, 6 north-west from Folkestone and 13 south from Canterbury, in the Eastern division of the county, Loningborough hundred, lathe of Shepway, Elham union and petty sessional division, Hythe county court district, rural deanery of Elham and archdeaconry of Canterbury. One of the principal branches of the Little Stour rises near the church, from a spring called St. Eadburg’s well. The church of SS. Mary and Eadburga is of stone of various periods, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells. In the churchyard, at a short distance from the church, foundations of Roman buildings still exist; these at one period belonged to the monastery of Lyminge, and also formed the foundations of a residence of the Archbishops. The register of births, dating from 1544, and that of burials, dating from 1538, and now in the British Museum; the register of marriages dates from 1665. The living is a rectory and vicarage, with the chapelry of Paddlesworth annexed, joint net yearly value £591, with 36 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of Arthur Miller esq. of Leatherhead, Surrey, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Robert Dobson Eves M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1850, was rebuilt in 1893—4, chiefly at the cost of Mr. T. Rigden, of Etchinghill, on a new site, and will seat 250 persons. Timothy Bedingfield’s charity, now of the value of £160 yearly, for educating poor boys of the parishes of Lyminge, Smeeth and Dymchurch, belonging to the Church of England, is administered by a governing body consisting of the rectors of the parishes and elected representatives. William Kingsford, of Lyminge, left £10 yearly for educational purposes, to be divided between this parish and that of Paddlesworth; and Stephen Kelcey esq. also of Lyminge, a bequest for bread to be distributed annually to the poor attending the church. The Elham union workhouse, built in 1835, is situated at; Etching Hill, in this parish, and is available for 346 intimates. The Elham Rural District Sanatorium was built in 1895 at a cost of £1,100 for 12 patients. The manor is now held by Messrs. W. Foord-Kelcey and J. Finn-Kelcey. The principal landowners are Wanley Ellis Sawbridge-Erle-Drax esq. of Ollantigh-in-Wye, John Howard esq. M.P. of Sibton Park, Henry Rigden esq. William Alexander Mackinnon esq. of Acryse Park, and Messrs. J. Finn-Kelcey and W. Foord-Kelcey. The land through the valley, which extends from Etching Hill towards Canterbury, is of great fertility, but on the hills the soil is light and poor; the latter consists of a ferruginous Ted earth with subsoil of chalk; a great portion is grazing, with upwards of 1,000 acres of woodland. The chief crops are grass and grain and roots in rotation. The area is 4.617 acres; rateable value, £5,800; the population in 1901 was 1,079 in the ecclesiastical and 1,030 in the civil parish, inclusive of 12 officers and 225 inmates in Elham Union workhouse.

Etching Hill, through which there is a cutting on the Elham Valley line 80 feet deep, is 1 mile south; Broad Street, a quarter of a mile south; Sibton, half a mile north-west; Longage, 1 mile north-west; Woodlands, half a male west; Rhodes Minnis, 2 miles north-west; Shuttlesfield, 1 ½ mile east; Hempstead, 2 miles west.

National School (mixed), built in 1849 & enlarged in 1885, for 152 children; average attendance, 110.
