Historical Description

At the end of Stane Street, the Roman road from Canterbnry, is the port of Lemanis, or Limne. At Limne Church, from the brow of the hill, may be discovered the remains of the Roman walls which enclosed an ancient station of that people. The ruins of this fort, or station, are of an oblong form.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LYMPNE (pronounced Lym) is a parish and small village, on the scarp of the hills, on the road from Hythe to Aldington, about 3 miles west from Hythe, a mile and a half south from Westenhanger station on the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway and 78 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Street hundred, lathe of Shepway, partly in the liberty of Romney Marsh, Elham petty sessional division, and union, Hythe county court district and in the rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. This place took its name from the ancient river Limene, which once ran close to the place and formed, in the time of the Romans a commodious port, then called Portus Lemanis. The Military canal passes through the southern part of the parish. The church of St. Stephen is of flint stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, and has a tower containing 5 bells: the church was restored at a cost of about £2,000 in 1876—8: there are 240 sittings: the churchyard is extensive, and chiefly on the north side. The register dates from the year 1618. The living is a vicarage, with that of West Hythe annexed, joint net yearly value £218, with 8 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Canterbury, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Henry Brydges Biron B.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. The charities are numerous, and are chiefly Tor the relief of the poor. Shepway Cross gave its name to the whole lathe; here also the Lord Wardens of the Cinque Ports were anciently sworn into office. In Lympne are the ruins of Studfall Castle, which once covered or inclosed 10 acres of ground; the fragments of the walls still remaining show it to have been a fortress of great strength; these ruins and some Roman remains are on the estate of Maj. Robert Bartholomew Lawes, of Old Park, Dover. Mrs. Herbert Deedes, of Saltwood Castle, is lady of the manor. The land is owned by several freeholders. The soil is light; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and roots. The area is 2,903 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £2,998; the population in 1901 was 467.

By Local Government Board Order 19,011, dated March 25, 1886, Marwood was transferred from Newington parish to Lympne.

National School (mixed), built in 1872, for 100 children; average attendance, 85.
