Historical Description

LYNSTED (or Lymsteod or Linsted) is a parish and large village, a mile and a half south-west from Teynham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 3 south-east from Sittingbourne, in the North Eastern division of the county, Teynham hundred, lathe of Scray, Faversham petty sessional division, union and comity court district and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is of flint in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower, with spire, containing a clock and 5 bells: there are several handsome monuments to the Teynham, Hugessen, Knatchbull and Drurye families, and brasses to those of Rooper and Woriey, besides a number of stained windows: there are 450 sittings, 250 being free. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1693; marriages and burials, 1654. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £210, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Canterbury and held since 1891 by the Rev. Thomas Jackson Sewell M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The market is discontinued. Lynsted Lodge, the seat of Lord Teynham, is one mile south-east. Dadmans is the residence of Frederic Gorell Barnes esq. M.A., J.P., F.R.G.S. Lieut.-Col. Charles John Roper Tyler J.P. and trustees of the late Capt. T. W. Vallance J.P. (d. 1902) are the chief landowners. The soil is brick earth; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are fruit, hops and wheat. The area is 1,826 acres; rateable value, £7,148; in 1901 the population was 1,215.

Dedman (or Dadmans) is three-quarters of a mile south from Lynsted church.

St. Andrew’s, a chapel of ease to Teynham, situated here, is of brick, and has 320 sittings. There are also Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 21 Oct. 1374; Allan Tassell, 20 West street, Faversham, clerk to the board; Sergeant-Major Thomas Smith attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1877, lor 200 children, was enlarged in 1897 to hold 350 children; average attendance, 197.
