Historical Description

MARDEN is a picturesque village and extensive parish, on the high road from Goudhurst to Maidstone, with a station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 40 miles from London, 8 south from Maidstone and 3 north-west from Staplehurst, in the Southern division of the county, hundreds of Maidstone, Twyford and Marden, lathes of Aylesford and Scray, petty sessional division of Cranbrook, Maidstone union and county court district, rural deanery of Sutton and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The river Beult flows through the parish. The church of St. Michael is of stone, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel was restored in 1862, and the nave in 1888: there are 500 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1559, marriages and burials from 1561. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £580, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Thomas Arnold Carr M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, and surrogate. Here are Congregational, Baptist and Wesleyan chapels, and there is a Primitive Methodist chapel at Marden Beech. Charities:-Richard Turner,” a husbandman,” left in 1569 certain lands, the rents of which were to be distributed twice a year to such poor as were not in receipt of parish relief: Edward Maplesden did the like in 1632, and Mary Allen in 1707, and her son John followed her example a few years later: the interest arising from these bequests, amounting in all to about £86 yearly, is distributed on Ash Wednesday. The trustees of the late Edward Hussey esq. (d. 1894), who are lords of the manor, F. S. W. Cornwallis esq. of Linton Park, and Col. William Henry Campion V.D. of Hove, Sussex, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay, loam and gravel. The chief crops are hops, wheat, oats and beans. The area is 7,709 acres of land and 40 of water; the rateable value is £18,484; and the population in 1901 was 2,337.

Stile Bridge is north-east, about 2 ½ miles, on the river Beult, which forms the boundary of the parish.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 15 Feb. 1895, Thomas Albert Fowle, clerk to the board.

Board, erected in 1896, at a cost of £5,500, for 180 boys, 134 girls & 102 infants; average attendance, 139 boys, 104 girls & 77 infants.
