Historical Description

MEOPHAM is a parish and very pleasant village, on the road from Gravesend to Wrotham, having a station 2 miles from the village, on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 25 ½ miles from London, 5 south from Gravesend, in the Mid division of the county, Toltringtrough hundred, lathe of Aylesford, Rochester petty sessional division, Strood union, Gravesend county court district, and in the rural deanery of Cobham and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. John the Baptist, a fine structure in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, was built by Simon de Meopham before he became Archbishop of Canterbury, dedicated in May, 1325, and restored by Archbishop Courtenay in 1396, and has a tower in the Early English style, containing a clock and 5 bells; the church was restored in 1859 and in 1870: there are several stained windows: there are 480 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1573; marriages from 1575. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with 6 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Arthur Frank Cowley Owen M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel with a schoolroom and vestry attached, built in 1832, and has 750 sittings, and a Particular Baptist chapel. Meopham Court is the residence of Mrs. Tweddell, and Camer, of William Allan Smith-Masters M.A., J.P. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are W. A. Smith-Masters esq. Mrs. Tweddell, Sir Sydney H. Waterlow bart. of Wrotham, and William McKenzie Bradley esq. The soil, which varies, is principally loam; subsoil, gravel and chalk. The chief crops are grain and hops. The area is 4,713 acres; rateable value, £11,147; the population in 1901 was 1,242.

Priestwood is 2 miles south-east; Harvel, 2 ½ miles south; Hoo Green, ¾ mile north near the station.

Culverstone Green, 2 miles south is partly in this parish. Culverstone School church, a pretty brick building, was opened by the Bishop of Rochester in the spring of 1873; it has 160 sittings.
