Historical Description

MERSHAM is a village and parish, 1 ½ miles west from Smeeth station on the Ashford and Dover section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 ½ south-east from Ashford, and 60 from London, in the Southern division of the county, Bircholt franchise, Chart and Longbridge hundred, lathes of Scray and Shipway, Ashford petty Sessional division and county court district, East Ashford union, and in the rural deanery of North Lympne and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The river Stour flows through the parish. The church of St. John the Baptist was originally Norman, and of this structure some details remain, but it is now chiefly of the Early English and later styles, and has an Early English tower with a spire, and containing a clock and 8 bells: the windows retain portions of ancient glass, and there are monuments and brasses and a stained window to the Knatchbull and Boys families; the church was restored in 1877 by Sir William Knatchbull bart. and the chancel by the Rev. Reginald Bridges Knatchbull-Hugesson B.A. a former rector: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £450, with 45 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Edwin Francis Dyke M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and hon. canon of Canterbury. Hatch, anciently styled “Le Hatch,” is a manor and seat in this parish, the property of Sir Wyndham Knatchbull bart. J.P. in whose family it has remained from the reign of Henry VIII. and is now occupied by Mrs. Delabere Blaine, the park covers 400 acres, and contains a lake. New House, a large mansion of red brick, standing in grounds and paddocks of 40 acres, is the residence of Edwin Peters esq. The Dean and Chapter of Canterbury are lords of the manor, and Sir Wyndham Knatchbull bart. is the principal landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, rock loam. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas and hops, with a large proportion of grazing land; the parish being noted for its sheep and lambs. The area is 2,673 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £5,365; the population in 1901 was 593.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 17 Oct.. 1874; Horace Hamilton, 11 Bank street, Ashford, clerk, to the board.

Board School (mixed), opened 2 April, 1877, with master’s house, for 154 children; average attendance, 110.
