Historical Description

MINSTER is a parish, village and station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, from which is a branch line to Sandwich, Deal and Dover, 81 miles from London by rail, 4 west from Ramsgate and 5 south-east from Margate: it is a limb of the Cinque Port liberty of Dover, in the Isle of Thanet division of the county, hundred of Ringslow, isle and union of Thanet, lathe of St. Augustine, petty sessional division and county court district of Ramsgate, rural deanery of Westbere and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. The village is lighted with gas from works established in the place, and supplied with water from the reservoir at South-wood, Ramsgate. This place gives the title of Baron of the United Kingdom to the Conyngham family, Marquesses and Earls of Conyngham in Ireland. The church of St. Mary, formerly belonging to a nunnery, founded here in A.D. 670, is of stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, and has a tower with spire, containing a clock and 5 bells: there are 650 sittings; portions of the Norman conventual buildings remain. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £580 with 28 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Arthur Ellison Molineux M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford and rural dean of Westbere. Here is a Catholic chapel dedicated to St. Mildred and served from Ramsgate; there are also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels and Salvation Army barracks. The workhouse for the Isle of Thanet union, built to hold about 600 inmates, is in this parish. The charities are of the yearly value of £40 and were left at various times by Dr. Richard Clark, John Carey esq. Mrs. Mary Belsey and John Swinford esq. Minster Horticultural and Cottage Gardeners’ Society holds its annual show the last Wednesday of July. Minster House is the residence of Frederick Swinford esq. The Abbey, an ancient building, is now the residence of Mr. Francis de Berckem Collard, farmer. The trustees of the Marquess Conyngham (a minor), who are lords of the manor, the trustees of the late D. Clarke esq. H. J. White esq. and Frederick Swinford esq. are the principal landowners. A great quantity of fruit is grown here, principally for the Ramsgate, Margate and London markets. The soil is loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, hops and potatoes. The area is 5,242 acres of land, 2 of water, 41 of tidal water and 66 of foreshore; rateable value, £13,576; the population in 1901 was 2,338, including 9 officers and 530 inmates of the Isle of Thanet workhouse.

These schools were erected in 1847 for 220 children, & the infants’ school was rebuilt in 1890.

The Union extends over the following parishes:-Acol (or Wood), Birchington, Garlinge, Margate, Minster, Monkton, Northdown, Ramsgate, St. Lawrence Extra, St. Lawrence Intra, St. Nicholas-at-Wade, St. Peter Extra, St. Peter Intra, Sarre, Stonar & Westgate-on-Sea. The population of the union in 1901 was 68,461; area, 26,187 acres; rateable value in 1902, £467,413.
