Historical Description

MURSTON is a parish and small village three-quarters of a mile north-east from Sittingbourne station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, Milton hundred and union, lathe of Scray, Faversham petty sessional division, Sittingbourne county court district and in the rural deanery of Sittingbourne and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The parish consists principally of marsh, bounded on the west by Milton Creek and on the north by the Swale. There are several docks on the Creek for landing goods and a quay, and over the Swale is a ferry to Elmley, in the Isle of Sheppey. The church of All Saints, erected in 1873—4 on a fresh site, at a cost of about £3,000, is of flint and stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and has a western tower containing 2 bells: the chancel of the ancient church remains, and is used as a mortuary chapel, but the arcades of the old church have been incorporated: there are 300 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1561; burials, 1562. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £450, with 45 acres, of glebe and residence, in the gift of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1897 by the Rev. James George Easton M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The rectory house, built in 1867 stands in 17 acres of glebe and is surrounded by fine timber. Brickmaking and the manufacture of cement are extensively carried on, and here also are the Sittingbourne gas works and the ship and boat building yards of Mr. Alfred Edgar Taylor and Mr. Charles Thos. Masters. P. T. Herbert Wykeham esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of George Smeed esq. E. Stains esq. and Mrs. White. The soil is brick earth; subsoil, chalk. The area is 1,291 acres of land, 5 of water, 23 of tidal water and 147 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,250; the population in 1901 was 963.

National Schools (mixed), built in 1868, for 500 children; average attendance, boys & girls, 300; infants, 150: the school has a small endowment from a charity left in 1783 by William Houssin for the schools of Bapchild, Tong & Murston.
