Historical Description

NETTLESTEAD is a village and parish, on the west bank of the navigable Medway, on the road from Maidstone to Tonbridge, 6 miles south-west from Maidstone, in the South Western division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Twyford hundred, petty sessional division of Mailing, Maidstone union and county court district, rural deanery of North Mailing and archdeaconry of Maid-stone. The Wateringbury and Yalding stations, on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, are both in this parish. The church of St. Mary is of stone, in the Rectilinear style, and has a tower containing 4 bells: there are six stained windows, some of the glass dating from 1425-39: the church affords 230 sittings, 180 being free. The register dates from the year 1640. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of West Barming, joint net yearly value £250, with residence and 38 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1862 by the Rev. William Francis Cobb M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Here are the remains of what was once a magnificent mansion, dating from the early part of the 14th century, and for nearly three centuries in the occupation of the De Pympe family. Lady George Gordon-Lennox, of Rodon Hall, E. Peckham, who is lady of the manor, and Roger Leigh esq. of Barham Court, Teston, are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, rock, gravel and clay. The chief crops are the usual cereals, hops and fruit. The area is 1,297 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £3,637; the population in 1901 was 611.

By Local Government Board Order 20,932, dated March 24, 1888, Keylands and Paddock Wood were transferred from this parish to the civil parish of Yalding. Nettlestead Green is near to Yalding station.

National School (mixed), built in 1865, for 120 children; average attendance,105.
