Historical Description
Newenden, a little village up the river Rother, about four miles south by west from Tenterden, is, in the opinion of Camden, the haven called by the Notitia of Antoninus, Anderida; by the ancient Britons, Caer Andred, and by the Saxons, Andredceaster. Presuming on the fidelity of Camden's opinion, its history may be thus collected from other writers. The Romans, to defend this coast against the Saxon pirates, placed here a body of troops, under the count or lord warden of the Saxon shore; it was then a famous city, and continued to be the chief place for strength on this side of the county, till about the year 491, when the Saxon chief named Ella, besieged, and took it by storm from the Britons, put them all to the sword, and razed the town to the ground. It was, however, rebuilt, in the reign of Edward I. and was then called Newenden.
NEWENDEN is a very small village and parish, on the borders of Sussex, 9 miles north-west from Rye station on the Ashford and Hastings section of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 5 ½ miles south-west from Tenterden and about the same distance east from Hawkhurst. terminal station, on the branch from Paddock Wood of the same railway and 53 from London. It was formerly a town of considerable extent, and is in the Southern division of the county, hundreds of Newenden and Selbrittenden, a liberty of itself, in the lathe of Scray, Cranbrook petty sessional division, Tenterden union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of West Charing, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The river Rother, which is navigable for barges, runs through the parish, and is here crossed by a bridge of three arches. The church of St. Peter is of stone, with some Perpendicular features, and has a turret containing one bell, and contains a Norman font, its sides being covered with grotesques: the church has been restored at a cost of £500, and affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £124, with 1 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1897 by the Rev. John Henry Burrows Assoc K.C.L. Here was anciently a house of Carmelite friars, founded by Sir T. Albuger in 1241, and the first of this order established in England, with the exception of Aylesford. Near Newenden is an entrenchment, and Roman coins have been found. The Earl of Cranbrook G.C.S.I., P.C., D.C.L, is lord of the manor; the principal landowners are the trustees of James Pinyon esq. James Selmes esq. and Miss Carlisle. The soil is principally clay and loam; subsoil in places of gravel and sand. The chief crops are hops, but the principal part of the land is in pasture. The area is 1,040 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £1,324; the population in 1901 was 126.
School (mixed), erected about 1838 & endowed with £22 yearly, derived from money left in 1836 by Samuel Bishop, of Lossenham, & invested in the funds; the school will hold 35 children; average attendance, 23.
