Historical Description

NONINGTON is a village and parish, in an open country, 2 miles south-east from the Adisham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 7 south-west from Sandwich, 10 south-east from Canterbury and 65 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, hundreds of Eastry and Wingham, lathe of St. Augustine, petty sessional division of Wingham, Sandwich county court district, Eastry union, East Bridge rural deanery and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary is of flint, chiefly in the Early English style, with inserted windows of Decorated and Perpendicular date, and has a tower containing 3 bells: the church will seat 330 persons, 68 sittings being free. The register claims to date from the year 1525. The living is a vicarage, net income £200, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Sidney George Hewlett Sargent M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The only charity is one left by a person unknown, who gave to two poor housekeepers two houses and an acre and a half of land, with a sack of wheat to each housekeeper every Christmas. Ratling Court, the property of Earl Cowper K.G., P.C. is now occupied by Mr. Harry Steed, farmer. Sir Percy D. N. Dixwell-Oxenden bart. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Lt.-Col. C. J. Plumptre V.D. and W. O. Hammond esq. The soil is chalky; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 3,808 acres; rateable value, £5,275; the population in 1901 was 740.
