Historical Description

NORTH CRAY with Ruxley (which gives name to the hundred) is a mile and a half north from Foots Cray, 1 mile south from Bexley station on the Dartford loop line of the South Eastern and Chatham railway, and 8 north-east from Bromley. The parish of Ruxley or Rokesley was united to North Cray in 1557, on account of the decayed state of the church. The church of St. James is of stone in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower with spire, containing 3 bells; the chancel was rebuilt in 1871, at a cost of £1,000: the east window is stained, and there are several memorial windows, a carved oak pulpit, dated 1637; a marble figure in memory of Octavia Catherine (Vane-Tempest), wife of Edward, 1st Earl of Ellenborough, d. 5 March, 1819; and a picture of the “Crucifixion” by Gessi, formerly in old Lamorbey church, in Bexley parish; the church affords 180 sittings, of which 83 are free. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £190, with residence and 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of Captain R. A. Vansittart, and held since 1865 by the Rev. Hugh William Johnston M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and rural dean of East Dartford. There are five almshouses, which have an endowment of £17 a year for repairs, which are occupied by respectable families, and £1 17s. is distributed yearly in bread. Woollet Hall, now the residence of Roland Keep esq. stands in grounds of about 30 acres, and is celebrated as the place where Viscount Castlereagh K.G. the eminent statesman, committed suicide August 12Th 1822; Vale Mascal is the residence of the Rev. Philip Reginald Egerton D.C.L., M.A. Mount Mascal, standing on a commanding eminence, from which it takes its name, and approached by a fine avenue of lime trees, is the residence of Vesey G. M. Holt esq. and has grounds of 29 acres. North Cray Place is the residence of Capt. Robert Arnold Vansittart D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, and stands in grounds of 150 acres. The soil is gravel and loam; subsoil, heavy loam and chalk. Fruit of every description is grown here in abundance for the supply of the London markets. The area is 1,474 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £5,157; the population in 1901 was 661.
