Historical Description

NORTHBOURNE, so named from its situation at the source of a small brook running to Sandwich, is a parish, 3 miles west from Deal station on the South Eastern and Chatham Joint railway, and 5 south from Sandwich, in the Eastern division of the county, Cornilo and Eastry hundreds, lathe of St. Augustine, Wingham petty sessional division, union of Eastry, Deal county court district, rural deanery of Sandwich, and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Augustine is a cruciform building of rough flint and brick, in the Norman and Early English styles, and has a central tower containing 5 bells; there is a fine monument to Sir Edwin Sandys kt. and two memorial windows; the church affords 225 sittings. The registers date from the year 1586. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £185, with residence and 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1896 by the Rev. William Ceidrych Thomas, of the University of London. The manor is now the property of Lord Northbourne, of Betteshanger, who takes his title from this place. The principal landowners are Lord Northbourne, the Earl of Guilford, Frederick L. H. Morrice esq. of Brampton Hall, Andover and the trustees of the late Admiral Sir Edward Bridges Rice K.C.B. (d. 1902) of Dane Court. The soil is loamy; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,657 acres; rateable value, £3,806; the population in 1901 was 751 in the civil and 491 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Tickenhurst is a detached part of the parish, in Eastry hundred and union, 1 mile north-west from Eastry, with 164 acres and about 30 inhabitants.
