Historical Description

About two miles from Gravesend is the village of Northfleet, irregularly built round Northfleet Green, and along the sides of the high road. The chalk works here employ a great number of hands, and extend from the northern side of the village to the river Thames. Northfleet Church is one of the largest in the diocese, and consists of a nave, aisles, and chancel, with a low tower, erected within the site of the foundation walls of the former one, but not at all correspondent with the rest of the building. Massive octagonal columns, which spread off into pointed arches, without the intervention of capitals, separate the nave from the aisles. In the chancel are remains of some ancient oak stalls, and in the south wall of the south side there are three stone seats. On a slab in the pavement of the church is a full-length brass figure of a priest standing beneath a rich ornamental canopy, and round the verge of the slab is the following imperfect inscription : "-ns. Petrus de Lucy quonda rector istius ecelie et prebendarius p'bende de Swerdes in ecclia cathedral Dublin, qui obiit decimo octavo die mensis Octobr. dni. Millmo CCC. Spetuagesimo eujus-" About forty years ago the grave beneath this stone was opened, and the body of Peter de Lucy was found, wrapped in leather.

Northfleet is a peculiar of the archbishop of Canterbury.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

NORTHFLEET is a village and extensive parish, mostly within the parliamentary borough of Gravesend, with a station on the North Kent (South Eastern and Chatham) railway, 22 miles from London and 2 west from Gravesend, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Toltingtrough, lathe of Aylesford, Strood union, Rochester petty sessional division, county court district of Gravesend, rural deanery of Gravesend and archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester; a steam boat leaves Rosherville pier for the Tilbury line on the Essex coast. The parish, hitherto governed by a Local Board, formed in 1874, is now controlled by an Urban District Council of 18 members, constituted under the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73). That there was a church here in the Norman times seems certain, since existing records describe its re-building while in the possession of the priory of St. Andrew, at Rochester, to which Archbishop Anselm had given it. The present church of St Botolph is chiefly in the Later Decorated style, and includes a western tower, built in 1628, within the ruins of the former one, and containing 6 bells: the chancel was built or finished by Peter de Lacey, then rector and prebendary of Swordes in the cathedral of Dublin (ob. 1375), whose fine brass, beautifully restored, has been replaced in the chancel floor; the nave was restored and reseated about 1846 and the chancel in 1863; the stained east window is a memorial to the late Prince Consort, who died 14 Dec. 1861, and there are several others and some monuments; there are 670 sittings, 400 being free. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £318, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1885 by the Rev. William Fox Whitbread Torre M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and surrogate. There is a Catholic chapel dedicated to Our Lady and St. Joseph, a Congregational chapel, built in 1853, with 350 sittings, and Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. The Factory Club was erected in the year 1878 at the sole cost of T. Bevan esq. of Stone Park, Greenhithe, for the use of the numerous workmen employed at the cement works here and is a substantial building, consisting of a hall with galleries, capable of holding 900 persons, and reading and billiard rooms. A public cemetery, 5 acres in extent, in Springhead road, was opened in 1893; it contains a superintendent’s house and two mortuary chapels, connected by an archway supporting a bell turret and spire; the cost, including the land, was about £5,000, and the whole is under the control of the Urban District Council. In the parish are large Portland cement works, and chalk, lime and brick works. Huggens' College, standing on an eminence near Stone Bridge, in this parish, is an extensive pile of buildings, consisting of fifty residences and a chapel with a beautiful and lofty spire, founded by the late John Huggens esq. of Sittingbourne and established by Act of Parliament in 1847; all the residences are now occupied by ladies of reduced circumstances, who have a weekly allowance of 20s. each; in connection with the college are 40 out pensions for poor ladies and gentlemen who have an allowance of £1 per week; all the annuitants must be over 60 years of age; the chapel was licensed for Divine service in 1870. The chaplaincy, net yearly value £250, with residence, has been held since 1870 by the Rev. Matthew Mortimer Ffinch B.A. of Oriel College, Oxford; the college is under the management of trustees. In 1893 the old Local Board purchased 15 acres of land, of which 10 acres have been laid out as a recreation ground and the remaining 5 acres let off as allotments; the total cost amounted to £2,365. Northfleet anciently belonged to the Archbishops of Canterbury. The north-west marsh was formerly covered by the Thames, but it is now protected by high flood-gates. William Montagu Calcraft esq. of Rempstone Hall, Wareham, Dorset, who is lord of the manor, and Thomas C. Colyer-Fergusson esq. of Wombwell Hall and A. Tolhurst esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The area is 3,930 acres of land, 4 of water, 337 of tidal water and 55 of foreshore; rateable value, £60,390; the population in 1881 was 8,790, and of the parish and Urban District in 1901, 12,906, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 8,251.
