Historical Description
NORTON is a parish, situated on both sides of the Watling Street, 1 mile south from Teynham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 3 ½ west from Faversham and 44 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Faversham hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, lathe of Scray, rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of flint stone of the Decorated period, with an embattled tower containing one bell: it was restored in 1872 at a cost of £680: there are some fine marble mural tablets of modern date: the church affords 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, with residence and 30 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester, and held since 1901 by the Rev. William George Heritage. Norton Court, the residence of Mrs. Charrington, was built in 1625, from designs by the famous Inigo Jones, and is pleasantly situated in about 70 acres of park-like grounds, flanked by woods and has some fine timber. Provender, an ancient gabled mansion, is the residence of Mrs. Borgstrom. Rushett, occupying a salubrious position, about 1 mile south from the church, is the property and residence of Captain John Henry Howard R.N. At Wren’s Hill are the kennels for the Tickham foxhounds, built in 1877 by W. E. Rigden esq. J.P. of Faversham, who is (1902) the master; the pack hunt three days a week. Sittingbourne and Faversham are convenient places for hunting visitors. The trustees of the late Francis James Wildman-Lushington esq. are lords of the manor, and Lord Brabourne P.C. Alured Faunce De Laune esq. of Sharsted Court, Captain John Henry Howard R.N. and the trustees of the late Ralph Hart Tweddell esq. of Meopham Court (d. 1895) are the chief landowners. The soil is a stiff loam; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are hops, fruit, wheat, barley, beans, oats and turnips. The area is 902 acres; rateable value, £2,078; the population in 1901 was 174.
School (for the united district of Buckland, Norton & Lucerne Street, a hamlet of Teynham), erected about 1848, by Stephen Rumbold Lushington, of Norton Court, for 60 children; average attendance, 50.
