Historical Description

OARE (or Ower) is a parish and village, on high ground and bordering on the Swale and Oare creek, 2 miles north-west from Faversham station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 5 miles south-west of Whitstable, 6 miles north-east of Sittingbourne, and 40 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Faversham hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, lathe of Scray and in the rural deanery of Ospringe and archdeaconry of Canterbury. There is a ferry here across the Swale to Harty. The church of St. Peter is of flint and stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and has a western belfry with spire, containing one bell: the church was restored and reseated in 1867 at a cost of about £700, and the chancel by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners: there are 110 sittings. The register dates from the year 1714. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £107, including 30 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Alfred Dyson Theol. Assoc. K.C.L. The Wesleyan chapel here was built in 1877. There are oyster beds, the property of a company. Earl Sondes is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil and subsoil are various. In this parish are the works of The Cotton Powder Co. Lim. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, oats and turnips. The area is 649 acres of land, 10 of water, 121 of tidal water and 112 of foreshore; rateable value, £1,652; the population in 1901 was 524.

This parish is included in Preston United School Board district, formed 15 June, 1880; the children of this place attend the Board schools at Davington.
