Historical Description

ORPINGTON is a parish and village, with a station on the South Eastern and Chatham railway, 14 miles from London, 6 south-east from Bromley and 8 south-west from Dartford, in the Western division of the county, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, Ruxley hundred, Bromley petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of West Dartford, and archdeaconry of Maidstone. The river Cray takes its rise here, and the flow is so great as often to flood the village. The South Eastern and Chatham Railway Co. are now (1902) constructing a loop line to Bickley. The church of All Saints is of stone and flint in the Early English style, and has a tower containing one bell: there is a fine altar tomb of the Decorated period, a number of stained windows, and several brasses: in 1771 the tower was taken down 44 feet; the church was restored in 1872, at a cost of £2,500, and has 350 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1884 by the addition of an acre of ground and contains two fine yew trees. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £420, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Walter Dunstan May M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Baptist chapel here was erected in 1882, and has 450 sittings. The Village Hall, erected in 1890 at a cost of £4,000 by A. Brown esq. of The Boundary, is a structure of red brick with buff terra cotta dressings, and contains library, reading and billiard rooms and a large hall for concerts seating about 400 persons. The K Co. 1st V. B. The Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment have their headquarters here. Charities amounting to £130, derived from money in the funds, are yearly distributed. St. Joseph’s Diocesan Catholic Orphanage was founded in 1893 by Dr. Butt, Bishop of Southwark, for the education of 240 boys, and is a large edifice of brick and stone. The orphanage is under the management of the Presentation Brothers, the Rev. B. O’Donoghue being the superior. In addition to the ordinary school teaching, boys are taught music and various trades. St. Ann’s Diocesan Catholic Orphanage, for the education of 170 girls, formerly occupied the same buildings, but in 1900 extensive new buildings were erected adjoining. In addition to the ordinary teaching girls are also trained for domestic service. The orphanage is managed by a community of the Sisters of Mercy. The buildings stand in grounds of 60 acres. The Priory, the residence of T. A. Roberts esq. belonged in 1032 to the priory of Christ Church, Canterbury, from which circumstance it acquired its name; it is a gabled mansion, chiefly of the Tudor period, the oldest portion being a small stone annexe, erected in 1393, and used by the priest who served the church; the principal rooms date from 1471, the later rooms being added by the Hon. Richard Spencer, who died here in Nov. 1661. Tubbenham is the residence of Sir Francis Henry Evans bart. K.C.M.G., M.P. The lord of the manor of Little Orpington is J. G. Stapleton esq. and of Great Orpington the Right Hon. Sir William Hart Dyke bart. P.C., M.P. The principal landowners are the lords of the manors, R. B. Berens esq. of Kevington, William May esq. A. Brown esq. and W. Vinson esq. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, chiefly chalk. Fruit of all kinds is extensively grown here for the London market; also hops. The area is 3,510 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £27,723; the population in 1901 was 4,259.

Board School (boys’ & girls’), built in 1882 & enlarged in 1893, for 476 children; average attendance, 260.

Board School, built in 1867, at a cost, including land, of about £2,000, defrayed by William Joynson esq. but taken over by the board & rebuilt in 1892; it will hold 250 children; average attendance, 235.
